Radio Birdman - The Essential Radio Birdman Disc 2

Some years ago Sub Pop has released an anthology of the great Australian punk rock pioneers Radio Birdman, an excellent release with one major flaw: why compile HALF of a band's recorded output and call the thing "The ESSENTIAL Radio Birdman", when the half you left off is no less essential than what is on it? Why not do a nice double-disc anthology of both of their excellent albums, padded out with the few EP's and live recordings that feature non-LP material, and end the story once and for all? But, as Sub Pop was too cheap to do this (and it baffles me because the thing they did put out is quite lovingly and nicely packaged), now you have to chase the original albums on Australian websites, pay excessive prices for them, and, in the case of the second LP "Living Eyes", accept the inferior version without the corresponding EP tracks as the earlier one seems to be out of print. So, for all of us who own the widely available Sub Pop package, I have compiled the remainder of the material recorded during their original run (there was a reunion which spawned an album called "Zeno Beach" and I believe several live discs; a B-side from this era, "Rock Bottom", is included here, too), designed to be a bonus disc to the official "Essential" one. Have fun with it!

Heathen, Destruction, Sepultura, Exodus - Live Thrashfest Classics 2011

Here are complete sets by four of the five bands which participated in last year's "Thrashfest Classics" tour, recorded at Hamburg's Markthalle on December 5th 2011. The only band that is missing is the first one, Mortal Sin from Australia, which is a pity for me personally because that's the band that I missed when the tour came to Zagreb. All the other bands were excellent, playing material from their early, genre-defining rainbows* (although Sepultura's "Chaos A.D." is hardly a THRASH classic) in the modern spirit of '80s nostalgia (which usually bothers me, but it's hard to keep one's convictions while Sepultura is playing "Infected Voice"). The sound quality is wonderful for an audience recording, you just might need to play with the equalizer a bit to take down the bass and enhance the middle; this worked for me but hear for yourself. And to give credit where it's due: all four sets were downloaded from Dimeadozen, where they are available as torrents, in FLAC format; I've converted them to 320 kbps mp3's to save drive space, but if you want the originals, get them there. On to the sets...

Mule - Singles, Outtakes and Live

There used to be a hateful tirade at the start of this post, born of a silly misunderstanding and best forgotten. In its place I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. K.M. for allowing me to share these recordings here.

Here is a great unreleased track, a different version of "Tennessee Hustler", and an hour's worth of mostly excellent-sounding live recordings by the wonderful Mule. The live recordings supposedly originate from Hamburg, but I have no idea whether they all come from a single show, or which order they were played in. I made a playlist by mixing the slower and faster material, and keeping the few poor-sounding tracks at the end, but you are free to sort them in whichever way you see fit. The live version of "To Love Somebody" is supposed to be an outtake from the Tempermill studio (like the two studio recordings, "Tennessee Hustler" and "Tell Me Now" - if that's really the name of the song), but it does have crowd noise at the end - would Mule bother with fake live recordings, and why? I guess we'll never know. It's a beautiful version anyway, well, if you know this band, than you know that the small body of work they left behind is 100% genius, so no surprise there. Enjoy!

Redskadrila - Promo + Live in KSET

This is the complete recorded legacy of a band some of my friends were in; three demo songs and two live shows recorded over their rather short career (a little over a year between the first and last gig, if I remember correctly). They played in a style I believe is called "combat ska", but this really isn't my scene - I can say I enjoyed their live shows a whole lot, but also that these recordings don't sound THAT great to me now; that's probably alcohol related though. If I try to be objective I'd say they were a rather good band with potential to become much better, which was never realised; if you're into this kind of stuff, they're definitely worth a listen.

Napalm Death - Grind Kaijyu Attack - Live in Japan

This is the Napalm Death side of the out of print limited edition (500 copies were pressed) live split LP with Nasum, recorded in Osaka on January 9th 2004. I haven't uploaded the Nasum side as it is identical to the "Doombringer" CD which is a regular release you can, and should buy. It's short and sweet at six songs/18 minutes, split evenly between their then most recent two albums, "Enemy of the Music Business" and "Order of the Leech". The sound quality is excellent and so are the tunes, and if you're like me and missing this rare recording bugged you, here's a cheap way to solve the problem. Enjoy!

Same story as yesterday, a Birthday Party offshoot performing live in Ljubljana during the latter part of the Eighties - this time, featuring Mick Harvey, and having featured Rowland S. Howard (he was out before this show). This show was recorded on September 16th 1988 if the Internet is to be trusted, the cassette rip is rather nice sounding (although there really is no need for the FLAC format I found and kept it in, because some people prefer hissy unlistenable bootlegs to be preserved in 10 MB-a-minute formats), so enjoy.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Zivi v Ljubljani

Here is another one from the FV Music edition of "official bootlegs", featuring Nick Cave during the "Kicking Against the Pricks" tour. The sound quality is mostly rather good, although "Train Long Suffering" and "Wanted Man" unfortunately sound like shit for the most part due to a chewed source tape - I hope modern cassette enthusiasts will appreciate this "warm analogue sound".

Joe 4 - Live in Sarajevo 2011 + bonus

Joe 4 are a great noise rock band from Croatia, a rare thing these days. Their sound is, to my ears at least, somewhere in the vicinity of Shellac/The Jesus Lizard (foreign), or Why stakla/Cog (Croatian) - and you can do much worse reference-wise, right? They have one 10" record and a compilation appearance out (with a Cog cover, rough mix of which is included here as a bonus track), which you can probably get directly from the band at http://joe4.bandcamp.com; they have also just finished recording their debut LP with a guy called Steve Albini. Google search says he did a Bush record before so expect some really great post-grunge melancholy! For a taster of their music here is a live recording from Sarajevo, quite good sounding but nowhere near actually seeing them live (you can't properly record on tape the fact that the singer is a body builder in short shorts). Thanks to the guys for letting me share this, admittedly not completely representative recording (it seems you can't properly record his voice either), and best of luck to them - although, judging by the amount of effort they are putting in the band, they probably won't need much of it to accomplish whatever it is they want to accomplish (marry Gwen Stefani).

Cog - Live Guranje s litice 29.04.2006

Here's a great-sounding (except for an unfortunately low level of the vocals) show by the great Cog, recorded and preserved by the guy who probably did the most for archiving Croatian '90s underground scene (and beyond), Igor Mihovilovic. It's from the latter part of their career, but it does feature two early "hits", "Belly Dancer" and "Puppet Play", which the bastards never played whenever I saw them past 1998 or so. The legend has it that they have even written a song in English called "Stare" so they could play it when somebody from the crowd yelled "Sviraj stare!" (play the old stuff) - but I haven't come across a recording of that song, and if they did play it, I don't remember (there was usually drinking involved). Thank you, Igor!

A good-sounding live set from Australia's ugliest band (and that's saying something!). Fourteen songs, fifty-two minutes, no big surprises but tons of classics.

The Cosmic Psychos have been the world's least nice band for nigh on thirty years, issuing wonderful examples of regular-guy misanthropy towards the world for the whole time; "I'm just a man who drank too much", "Damn, I shot the neighbour's cat" and "I don't think the neighbours like me" are all choruses from the same album. If you have managed not to find out about them yet and you do like no-bullshit working class rock, hurry up and hear what you've been missing.

Killing Joke - 2001 Demos

Killing Joke are one of those rare bands to have remained brilliant throughout multiple decades and numerous lineup changes. This is a demo they used to get a contract for their 2003 "comeback" self-titled album after a seven-year hiatus; the album featured drumming by Dave Grohl, should anyone care. After the three songs from the original demo, the archive contains another three tracks, these being UK and Japanese bonus tracks from the album. Enjoy!

Iron Maiden - Maiden Japan Fan Club Edition

All Iron Maiden fans know about the brilliant 1981 live EP "Maiden Japan", recorded on a Japanese tour and featuring the last Maiden recordings ever to feature the wonderful Paul DiAnno on vocals; however, many of them do not know that the whole show from which these recordings originate was released some years ago, in the form of a very limited-edition fan-club-only CD. The disc features seventeen excellent-sounding tracks and the original, quickly rejected cover art with DiAnno's severed head; I've also added a second disc of early EP's, demos and compilation appearances to complete the picture. You can find all this stuff elsewhere online, but here it's all in one package, with some additional tweaking (i.e. the "bonus" 8+ minutes version of "Drifter" is most easily available from a slowed-down rip; here it's restored to its original speed), and a recent photo of Paul DiAnno to haunt you in your dreams:

Various - Tribute to Humphrey Bogart

This is a five-way split tape of Croatian melodic punk bands from the second half of the '90s, which I am posting because it contains four recordings by Mikrofonija, whose singer, Tuna, died two years ago today. Although the booklet claims that these are unreleased recordings, to my ears they sound the same as the versions on their first self-titled cassette; here there are anyway, along with four other bands from the same scene. Thanks to Istva for the rip, no thanks to the fucker "above" for the R.I.P. I miss Tuna and his band and so does the whole Croatian punk scene. :(

Amy Winehouse - The Ska EP Expanded

What a great cover.

I won't be getting into the unfortunate girl's fate here, as I'm sure you've read more than enough about it these last days (as I'm writing this it's been less than a week since she has passed away); I'll just share a part of her musical story some of you may have not be aware of - at least I wasn't, until quite recently. Here is a collection of her ska recordings, comprising four studio covers of classics you probably know if you're at least a bit of a ska fan; six more live recordings of (mostly) the same songs; a live cover of a song I never liked, but have included for completeness' sake ("Free Nelson Mandela" by The Special AKA); and a bonus cover of one of Amy's songs performed by 2Tone legends The Selecter, a few hours after she died, less than two miles from her flat. Heavy shit.

Anyway, from what can be heard on these recordings, Amy was a fantastic ska performer, picking mostly material from the 2Tone era (either Specials songs or songs The Specials had covered, basically), but delivering them in a wonderfully giddy, childish tone, which makes them sound much closer to the Jamaican originals of the Sixties, at least to my ears; add to that the clipped sound featured on many of the songs here (that's the way to think of it - a feature, not a bug!), and you've got yourself a great fake ska classic from '65. Have fun!

Carter USM - Live in Zagreb 20.05.1994., Pt. 2

Carter USM, one of my favourite bands, had a brush with popularity which to me seems completely unexpected - sure, their combination of distorted guitars and pop-friendly sequencers does sound like something that could warrant a novelty hit or two, but I could never help but listen to the lyrics, which talked about systematic abuse in old people's homes, rape, war mutilation or slimy landlords - and some of those were the actual hits! Theirs was a subject matter much more common in grindcore than the charts; but I guess those people who only bought the hit singles were the ones who didn't listen to lyrics anyway. Jim Bob's poetry, and I do call it poetry, is the best stuff I have ever heard from a band, punk or otherwise (and I do also call them "punk"!), aside from maybe Joe Strummer's most inspired moments. I believe this is why they still have a rather large cult following, even thirteen years after the demise of the band, and their sporadic reunion concerts are always sold out long in advance (the one I saw, at Brixton Academy in 2007, was sold out six months before the actual gig - I wonder whether, say, Ned's Atomic Dustbin could pull that off). Their depictions of the life of the underdog are so vivid and real that their slowly declining career arc seems weirdly appropriate - they were just two (later three, even later six) guys who were thrust into a world they had no connection with and no love for, and it's no wonder they were quickly ejected from it arse over tit. That's what gives their lyrics such poignancy, and I admit to have found myself misty eyed more than once while sitting by my cassette player and belting out lyrics such as "And in round two, we'll fight like Ali; and by the end of the second round, we'll be singing you and whose army are gonna stop us now?" - coming right after that most humble of rallying calls, "We'll paint the town a lighter shade of grey and brown". WOW. Sadly there was no second round for them, and after being dropped from label after label - due to reasons as simple and logical as nobody buying their records after the "Pet Shop Pistols" fad ended - the band quietly stopped, with the two songwriters, Fruitbat and Jim Bob, continuing to operate way under the radar with new projects, some of which would be quite worthy of your time, if you had time for Carter in the first place. Anyway, to cut this tirade short, they had a couple of concerts in Croatia way back when; a part of the second one, from 1994, was released as a bonus disc to the "Worry Bomb" album (their finest - and the one where they lost their schtick, and their popularity, by taking a live drummer on board) and it's rather easy to obtain, either second hand or on file sharing services; however four more songs from the show were released as a CD single, "The Young Offender's Mum Part Two", and are much more elusive. Here they are then, and if I ever lay my hands on the "Flicking the V's" video tape which features the whole show, you'll be the first to know.

Maggie Thatcher on the cover and the couplet "Would you like to teach the world to sing? You're gonna get your head kicked in." I told you they were a punk band!

Here's another one from the "Vsi zivi" series, sadly with not as great of a sound as the first one. I believe the original tape sounded much better, but the rip probably came from a tenth-generation copy; if anyone who owns a better sounding copy reads this, you know where to find me. Check this out: the Subs were already a 10 years old band when this was recorded. Twenty-five years later, they're still THE SHIT, at least live (not "shit", "the shit"!). Respect.

Sonic Youth - Live in Slovenia 1985 and 1987

This is an "official bootleg" tape released by the great Slovenian label FV Music, part of their "Vsi zivi" cassette series which also featured concerts held in Slovenia by bands such as Nomeansno, Swans, Pere Ubu, UK Subs and a few others. I hope I'll manage to complete the whole series one day; this is the first installment I got a hold of. The first five songs are from a 1985 show in Sentvid and the remaining seven from the one held in Ljubljana in 1987. The sound is quite good and so are the performances - if you're a fan you should like this.

Rent a Cow - High Noon in Wanker County

Here's a fun mini album by Rent a Cow, an obscure German cow-punk band from the 90s, a tape of which I had long ago - now I found it again so I might as well share it. Their music was excellent (check out the song "Rest My Bones" especially), and although I do have a bit of a problem with the lyrics (you can't really do country/rock'n'roll clichés as a foreigner if you're not incredibly well-versed in the language, and even then it can sound corny - look at all the Swedish rockers), the songs are more than worth hearing. They have one more album which you can buy here should you wish so, and a 7" single which will most probably remain in the 90s. Enjoy!

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Live at Krizanke, Ljubljana 1994 - VIDEO

This is the only picture of Cave in Ljubljana in 1994 that I could find. A charming one!

I've seen Nick Cave for the first time in my life a few weeks ago, in the guise of Grinderman; I was happy to see him and the show was quite good - entertaining and energetic, but I had a problem with the SONGS. To my ears, they were mostly only good songs, with maybe two very good ones, and no great ones; and that is the feeling I get with Cave's whole post-"Murder Ballads" output, either with the Bad Seeds or otherwise. I will admit that I haven't really given those records very many chances, but then again, I never needed to give more than one chance to "Prayers on Fire" or "The Good Son". Anyway, this is a show from the tour for "Henry's Dream", while he was still fantastic, and it is a very high quality single-camera shot with excellent sound; you can see it on YouTube, but this is a higher quality version. Unfortunately it's not the complete show, but the nine songs that are included are all excellent. It's a single file but here is the track listing:

D.R.I. - I.M.Y.T. Compilation

D.R.I. are one of my favourite bands in at least two genres - hardcore punk and thrash metal. I've seen them twice in the last year or so, and both shows were total brain pummeling. What a wonderful band. Here I'm sharing three hard-to-find songs of theirs - "Against Me" (a demo recorded way back in 2004 - a long, long time ago, when music was much better, and even this song's namesake band didn't suck!), "Hide Your Eyes" and "Out of Mind" (cassette and LP bonus tracks from the "Definition" album, which should supposedly be re-released one fine day, and that is of course the day I take them down off the blog). In order not to have an eight minute download, I've added two so-so bootlegs from the mid-Eighties (both with unexceptional sound, one incomplete - but the other from a show with SLAYER! wooohoooo!), alongside a rather often circulated demo, bootlegged as "Dirtiest Filthiest Demos", if memory serves. The sound quality is shit but there are fun versions of "Johnny B. Goode" and "Louie Louie" at the end, plus a few songs which might be otherwise unreleased (the bootlegger didn't recognize them and neither did I, but then again, early D.R.I. isn't exactly "Sandinista!" in terms of eclecticism or song lengths - it all sounds the same, but it's an excellent same!). Bitch Magnet - Live in OKS, Osijek, 1990

This here recording means A LOT to me. It is a recording of a show by an important, influential and well-known American band - held in the little student's club of my hometown, the place where I spent much of my early youth, and even played with two of my crappy bands. I was only nine at the time when foreign bands actually visited Osijek (the same year Cows and God Bullies played the same venue), and the war that started in 1991 killed all "alternative" momentum that was building up throughout the Eighties. When I came of age and started going to shows roundabouts 1996/1997, OKS was still a place punk bands could play, but the roster went down a few levels - out-of-town acts were limited to Croatian demo or DIY-tape-level punk bands, while the local ones went from excellent, yet forever underground bands like Cog, to high school punk-as-fuck excuses for getting drunk, all the way down to guys from nearby villages in their thirties playing rock standards, local pop underachievers, and a vomit-inducing Hare Krishna-type hippie bullshit called Tattva (these last three types of bands tried their best to ruin my childhood and I hate them all for this). After a few years, at the beginning of the 21st century, the place managed to go even lower, and is now a mecca for local "Golden Youth", a term which I can't even begin to describe without wasting tons of precious black ink on my monitor, so here are a few pictures which might give you an idea of how a Bitch Magnet show in OKS in 2011 would look:

Bosnian folk singer Mile Kitic (roughly translated as "Lovable Little Cock"), being a bitch magnet.

Anyway, let's get back to the topic, that is, this Bitch Magnet show. This is a soundboard recording, meaning that aside from some clipping due to a too high volume setting, it's pretty excellent-sounding. It was obviously recorded on a 60 min tape, and therefore features most of the show, sans the better part of "Valmead", and I'd say about half of the Mission of Burma cover "Dirt", after tape sides ran out (which is sad because this is the only recording of this cover I know of). Instead of that, you get a three-and-a-half minute bass string replacement, including a pointless drum solo, a failed Albini-style Q&A-session, and lots of nerdy voices (check out the most inappropriate "Born to rock!" ever). A fun detail is how Sooyoung keeps making remarks about the audience being incredibly quiet - well, if he'd come to play Osijek these days, there'd be fifteen people in the venue, with another hundred outside, complaining at the shocking door price of roughly three beers. But I digress - all in all, this is a really nice piece of local history for my friends from Osijek, and a quite good live document for any Bitch Magnet fan, to get you through the waiting for their reunion later this year (confirming my long-time prediction that we are nearing the moment when every band that ever existed, will reunite and play shows. Can't wait for that Robert Johnson gig at Pitchfork Festival 2036!)

Concrete Worms - Punk Rock Crew + Live at Garage Fire 13.06.2009.

Concrete Worms are my favourite currently active punk rock band from the ex-Yugoslavian region. They've got it all - excellent male-female vocals by the husband and wife duo of Dragan and Dragana (hah!), a wonderful unhinged energy provided by the excellent drummer Ilija, and an incredible range of covers which shows a true love of all things punk rock (New Bomb Turks! Johnny Thunders! Poison Idea! The Humpers! Misfits! The Exploited! And most incredibly, "Jackson", made famous by Johnny and June Carter Cash - you know Johnny Cash, he's that guy who - according to all the other bands' cover choices - performed only two songs in his whole career). I saw them live at least 10 times, and every show was incredible, making me look forward to each one like it's the only time I'll ever be able to see them. I have uploaded an old demo of theirs, which is not available for sale as far as I know, and which is good, but not as great as they now are; and an excellent, but sadly short live recording from two years ago, which is as great as anything you've ever heard. They have released two better CD's after this one, called "Just Gamblin'..." and "Cities of Death", but you can buy those from the band for some ridiculous price - so do that.

Still, it's one of the better-sounding recordings of Joe Strummer's tenure as a Pogue, when he replaced the dysfunctional drunken poet Shane MacGowan (who is still dysfunctional and drunk, but now is again a member of the reformed Pogues - I guess it's easier to work with a guy like him in a cash-grab nostalgia act*, than in an active band which produces new music). Who would've thought in 1991 that twenty years later (and I'll see the Pogues on 14.07.2011. - twenty years almost to the day!) Joe would be dead, while Shane would still be gigging? I guess even the Devil himself is scared of having to face Shane MacGowan's hangover after fifty years of drinking.

I guess this show was added to the tour later?

In my opinion today's Napalm Death is the best Napalm Death ever, and this show is as great as any one I've heard or been to. The sound quality is, let's say medium, with a bit of a booming low end and a little too much crowd noise, but otherwise rather clear and noise-free. The recording is a bit short at 52 minutes - I wonder whether it was a short set, or if it's incomplete - there's no "Greed Killing" here, which they played every time I saw them. I'd also love to have the opening set by "Napalm Truth", Venomous Concept (Shane Embury and Danny Herrera + Kevin Sharp and Dan Lilker) - if I ever find it, I'll add it to the post.

Debeli precjednik - Demos, Comps, EPs 1996-2001

Debeli precjednik/Fat Prezident is probably the biggest and most popular punk rock band in Croatia to willingly stay firmly in the underground - a highly respectful band composed of highly disrespectful individuals, so to say. Here's a compilation of their early material which you can mostly find in other places online, but not all together in a single file - so that's my contribution to the Scene. It contains their first and second demo tapes, two live songs from this compilation, two more songs from a compilation I'll put up some other time (thanks to Istva for the rip), the "Tribute to Zli Farmeri" EP, and a live cover from a show in KSET. "Pobuna" from the first demo is my favourite song of theirs, as it has only three short parts, but every one of them could have easily been a whole great song in its own right - shoving them all together in just two minutes makes a totally over-the-top melodic punk hit for the ages. The rest of their career is shit but what can you do? :)

I'm not a great connoisseur of Will Oldham/Bonnie 'Prince' Billy/Palace Music, but I have liked everything I have heard by him, and judging by this show, I regret not being able to catch either one of his shows in Croatia. This is an excellent soundboard recording of the whole show, two hours long, with tons of exceptional songs and funny stage banter - highly recommended.

Die Hausers - Promo Tape

Another legendary (at least in local circles) band from Osijek, Die Hausers played a very unique style of post-punk/noise rock during the Nineties; they still play live from time to time, but this tape, released by the M/F Scum label, is their only official recording. I don't own the cassette anymore so I am sharing a rip which I got from Soulseek, which originated from this blog; however their link is dead (may Rapidshare rot in hell), so here it is again, hopefully on a more permanent location.

David Byrne - Live at Krizanke, Ljubljana, 10.07.2009.

Here is a bootleg I am especially happy to have found, as it is of a show I attended, and had a wonderful time at. This is from the 2009 "Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno" tour, when David was promoting the then-new "Everything That Happens Will Happen Today" album, along with older material he did with Eno (early Talking Heads records, "The Catherine Wheel" solo album and the "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" collaboration), and a few songs which had nothing at all to do with Eno, but were huge hits, seemingly deserving of sacrificing the concept of the tour (similar to the Iron Maiden "Somewhere Back in Time 1980-1989" tour, where every show included "Fear of the Dark", from 1992 - ah well). It was a great show, with a strong visual element you won't be getting here, but which you can see on the new "Ride Rise Roar" DVD - I haven't seen that yet, but I'm sure it is excellent.

I was rather disappointed to arrive at Krizanke and find out that the show was a sit-down affair, even thinking I wouldn't have taken the trip had I known that before; however, when all the dancing shenanigans started, I realised that being able to walk around, go to the bar and back, etc. would just be distractions to the whole experience, and that the show required your whole attention, which you really can't give unless seated down. Towards the end of the show, David called the audience to come forward and dance, and I believe this was the first occasion that I danced sober since finishing elementary school. I'm happy that you won't get the visual of THAT!

Anyway, the show is complete and very long, the sound excellent, and I'm very grateful to whoever recorded this for enabling me to relive the experience and share it with you, the loyal reader. Enjoy!

Here is the complete video of the first foreign band playing in Croatia since its declaration of independence and the beginning of the war, which was still raging when Carcass came to Pula. You can grab the audio of the show, along with the set list and a few pictures, here - it's a great blog ran by the guy who had recorded this show almost twenty years ago. Also check out a nice amateurish interview done by Croatian television here. Oh yeah, the opening acts were bands called HATRÖSS and CENOTAPH - I wonder what they sounded like? :)

Paraf - Demo

Woohoo, finally!!! I have a five-song demo recording by PARAF, one of the most important Yugoslavian/Croatian punk bands ever! This is only a small part of their demo legacy - there are lots of songs which were never released in any form, and which I have yet to hear - but these five songs, mostly later re-recorded for their debut single and LP, are still a thing to behold. The sound quality is wonderful, the lyrics less polite than on the officially released versions (the exception being "Narodna pjesma", which was released on the "Novi punk val" compilation LP in this same version), and this studio recording of the song "Goli otok" is the only one I am aware of, so what are you doing still reading this?!

Rangoraks/Narcisi - Nula bodova! + Astro-Core

Another old band from Osijek, Rangoraks were playing fun melodic punk rock for several years before slowly fading away at the turn of the century. They had one "official" release, a split tape with Narcisi from Nasice released by the "M/F Scum" label, and a short CD EP, released after they stopped playing, if memory serves. During their time as an active band, we considered them to be equals with Debeli precjednik/Fat Prezident; however DP/FP are still playing, releasing records and are probably the most popular "underground" punk rock band in Croatia, while Rangoraks has fallen into obscurity. forgetters & Jawbreaker - Radio Sessions

forgetters are a new-ish band featuring Blake Schwarzenbach on guitar and vocals, which is why I have coupled their recent session for the WBEZ Radio with two archive ones by Jawbreaker. I was lucky to be able to catch them on two shows of their European tour, in Ljubljana and Zagreb, and although I do tend to be somewhat too forgiving to people from bands I like (I have actually bought the last Clash LP!), I think forgetters really are an excellent band. Their recorded legacy so far consists only of one double 7" release, which you really should buy; however, they have plenty of songs that still wait to be officially released, and five of them (one being a Human League cover) were played at this session. If you clicked on the WBEZ link above, you might have seen an mp3 file available for download there - I only made separate files for each song and added ID3 tags, to make listening easier.

As for the Jawbreaker part of the archive, it's a pair of ancient recordings from 1990 (read: before they have gotten REALLY good), and with rather poor sound quality, too. However, it does include two otherwise unreleased tracks, and makes a nice contrast with the main thing. Hope someone enjoys it.

Borci protiv pokvarenog sistema - Diskografija

I've been away from the blog for a while, so this is sort of a "comeback" post - and what should a punk rock comeback be like? Judging by most historical examples, it should be... shitty. Hence, my band from the turn of the century, Fighters Against the Rotten System, or Borci protiv pokvarenog sistema. I played bass, wrote lyrics, sang a little, and masterminded the whole shenanigan, and the story goes something like this...

Back in 1998, Croatian punk rock scene consisted almost exclusively of anarcho bands, who were mostly nice people and had completely laudable goals; however, in mine and my friends' opinion, they played generic music and wrote inept, naive and boring lyrics, aimed at people who already knew and agreed with everything they sang about. That's why we decided to start the most retarded and generic anarcho band there ever was, probably hoping to prove something, and to master our instruments enough to start a "real" band someday. The real band never came to be, my bass guitar got sold for 100 deutsch mark when money ran out on a summer vacation, and all that remains of my musical career are two demo recordings, two atrocious live shows*, one sadly prophetic song title, and fun memories. Here for the first time (and I know you've been craving this since you first heard about this strange thing called "punk rock") is the complete B.P.P.S. recorded legacy, for the whole world to see, hear, and dismiss as stupid childish prattle that it was. What the hell, we've had fun!

You can find the complete lyrics at the B.P.P.S. web site, proudly not updated since 2001, here. They're not great but they certainly beat the music - and that approach worked wonders for Anal Cunt, didn't it? There's also a completely fictitious band history, which a surprisingly large number of people took seriously - I guess you really can't make a parody obvious enough.

And yeah, if you can't speak Croatian, forget about the whole thing. Did I mention the music was shitty?

Slayer - Live at Olympic Stadium, Moscow, 15.03.2011.

Slayer in Zagreb.

Here's a rather good sounding show from the current Slayer tour, European Carnage 2011. I was lucky to see two shows on the tour, one in Rome with Gary Holt replacing Jeff Hanneman, and the other in Zagreb, with Pat o'Brien replacing Gary replacing Jeff. Both shows were absolutely wonderful, and so is this one - the set list differs slightly from the one at the shows I saw, with "Snuff" and "Seasons in the Abyss" replacing "Hallowed Point" and "Mandatory Suicide" in the latter part of the tour, but most of it is the same. With the last two Slayer albums being an incredible return to thrash metal form, because of me never having seen them before, and after all the hassle of getting into the sold-out show in Rome (through a hole in a fence, across a tennis field, by the roadies, through the kitchen, and into the first row!), I will always remember that evening.

And the Devil saw that it was good.

Sonny Vincent - Three Covers

Here's a small update as an excuse for a couple of advertisements.

One, Sonny has a new album coming up and a record release show that I would love to attend, as it features the wonderful Guitar Gangsters as the opening band - one of the three criminally underrated British punk rock bands (alongside The Crack and The (Newtown) Neurotics - you really should check out all of these bands).

Two, the Testors are reuniting for a couple of American shows, one in NYC and the other at the Atlanta Mess Around festival. Some more gigs I won't be attending!

Finally, here's the short EP I made out of the three cover songs released on various compilations. The originals are by Johnny Thunders, the Ramones and Chuck Berry, respectively, but you knew that. The Chuck Berry cover utilises the talents of the late, great Mr. Arthur "Killer" Kane, whose unlikely life story was made into a beautiful and poignant documentary which you absolutely need to see. The movie is called "New York Doll" and here's its trailer. From playing bass for the world's most outrageous rock'n'roll band to employment at a Mormon library and back - wow.

Grant Hart - Live KST Beograd 17.,18.11.1995.

Four days ago, on his fiftieth birthday, Grant Hart was supposed to play the KSET club in Zagreb, Croatia, and I was looking forward to seeing him for the second time; sadly, it was not to be, and Grant has spent the night in a Croatian jail for reasons too ridiculous to write about (but which could be described with the term "bureaucratic over-eagerness and stupidity"). Here, for all the other fans who were hoping to see this show, is a soundboard recording from his two shows in Belgrade fifteen years ago, containing an hour and a half of wonderful acoustic versions of his Hüsker Dü, Nova Mob and solo material. I don't know which songs come from which show, but I assume the author of the tape that was uploaded somewhere on the Internet has picked one version each of all (or at least most of) the songs played over the course of the two nights. It's too bad the shows aren't complete but this is still much better than nothing. Here's hoping we will be able to see Grant some time again soon...

Various - Sides 1-14

This is a series of 7" singles with AC/DC covers and songs "inspired by" AC/DC, performed by artists such as Shellac, Killdozer, Mule, and other great bands. I have never seen the actual singles, but the pictures found on the Internet show that they are probably beautiful - they are way too expensive for me to ever own them, too, so here's an MP3 compilation of all the songs, featuring the driest production sound ever heard on a Shellac recording (which is saying quite a lot), beautiful acoustic-ballad reconstructions of AC/DC by Mule and Will Oldham (here under the moniker Palace Contribution), and a great song title in Denison/Kimball Trio's "Back in Blanc" (also one of their more listenable recordings, in my opinion - I was never able to get into them, although Duane Denison is without a doubt my favourite guitar player). A nice listen.

The Jesus Lizard - Live Primavera Sound 28.05.2009.

As much as I get annoyed by the whole recent fad of every band that has ever existed reuniting, being able to see the Jesus Lizard for one and only time in my life has made all the other half-assed reunions slightly more bearable. I was at this show, which was recorded for posterity by the great WFMU radio station, who had it available for download on their site for a while. What can I say about finally seeing a band I have always thought to be the most perfect musical combo ever to walk this Earth, or at least one of the two most perfect ones (the other being Fugazi)? I was so overwhelmed that I can hardly remember it, mostly in short disconnected fragments - Yow leaping into the crowd during only the second or third bar the band had played; Duane having a series of LED's on his amp that for some reason spelled "Happy New Year"; Mac looking exactly like Jeremy Irons, and playing his drums in the most amazing way imaginable; all the other hipster bands that played the festival looking even more foolish when compared to such a display of sheer musical FORCE. Scratch out that earlier sentence, Fugazi were great, but the Jesus Lizard were the GREATEST. Thank you for reuniting for me and other kids that were born too late to witness your original tenure - your namesake might be late for his Second Coming, but yours was quite enough for me.

Psihomodo pop - Live Lapidarij 26.10.1986.

Psihomodo pop are one of the more popular Croatian rock bands, which is not surprising, as their singer is a great showman, they write funny lyrics, and their songs are some of the best rock'n'roll songs ever written. OK, so that's because they steal riffs from famous rock'n'roll songs and then write their own lyrics (and songwriting credits)*. But still! They began in the early Eighties, released their first LP in 1986, were great until around 1995 (at least if you were a kid then and hadn't heard all of their material before, on Ramones, Velvet Underground and Blondie records - I was and I hadn't), and then proceeded to become a completely washed-out, unfunny joke band which just won't quit. I saw exactly one good show of theirs in the last ten years, and even that was just because they were supporting Marky Ramone, so 1) they only had some 40 minutes to play, 2) they picked their most punky material for the show, and 3) Marky's show sucked so badly that it readjusted the universal criteria for "good" and "bad". Anyway, their first three or four records are still very well-recorded, well-produced and passionately played power-pop/glam/punk-rock, and this show I am sharing contains my four favourite songs of theirs ("Kad places", "Sve je propalo", "Leteci odred" and "Ja sam"), two songs they have never officially released (one of them quite good - "Istocni vjetar"), a fun, trumpet-aided version of "Zar nebo...", and amusing stage banter, all recorded in quite high quality a quarter of century ago for your present-day enjoyment. SexA - SexA u Galeriji SC 02.06.1990.

SexA (stands for "Sedatives ex Apotheka", apparently) was a cult post-punk/noise-rock band from Croatia; they were active since the early Eighties, and have ended their career in the Netherlands in the mid-Nineties. They started out as a dark new wave band, but my favourite phase of their existence is the later, harsher stuff, comprising the excellent LP "No Sleep 'til Pussy/Fuck Piction" and 7" single "Tidamja/Pussy in the Sky with Diamonds". This live tape comes from that same era and features a few songs not available on either of those more widely spread releases; it's a good tape, although the sound is a bit chaotic and for some reason varies from song to song - I don't know whether this was the case with the original tape or the mp3's come from different sources (it's not my rip). The last song seems to come from a studio session and could easily have been included on the LP.

Sleater-Kinney - Singles and Sessions

Sleater-Kinney were one of my favourite bands, at least until they had released what is universally considered to be their finest album, the Dave Fridmann-produced Hendrix-boogie-rock extravaganza "The Woods", which I was never able to wrap my head around. I guess that album at least made me a little bit less sad when they decided to call it quits afterwards, although I will always regret never being able to see them live. Here I have collected most of their non-album singles output, along with a radio session and five live songs, recorded during "The Woods" era, which I don't get much enjoyment from but perhaps you will. I still consider the pinnacle of their career to be their second and third albums, "Call the Doctor" and "Dig Me Out", which feature the most passionate female vocals this side of Poly Styrene, incredibly interesting guitar interplay, fantastic hooks, and the most romantic sentence I have ever heard, "I wanna be your Joey Ramone". (For the moment we'll ignore the song's second chorus, which substitutes Joey for a gentleman I would never want anybody to be for me.) On to the links...

Voivod - A Flawless Structure? Demo

This artifact is slightly less rare then most of the stuff I try to find for the blog - it is easily available on file sharing networks - but it is the only Voivod demo (except for the "Rrröööääärrr Rough Mix Demo", which I wasn't able to find anywhere) not available on any blog, so it is kinda exclusive - at least in the sense that no-one else had bothered uploading it before. I am including it here because I wanted to have at least something by Voivod, to celebrate the fact that they will be playing in the city where I live in a few months, and that makes me extremely happy because I had never expected to see them - I was pretty sure they gave up on the band as a live act after their guitarist's death. For the uninitiated, Voivod were formed in Canada in the early Eighties, were incredibly influential in at least three metal genres (black, thrash and progressive metal), yet never sounded much like any other band in any of those genres. They started out as a primitive black/thrash hybrid, went on to incredibly intelligent technical thrash, then to progressive metal (sometimes even closer to rock than metal), and ended up as a band which does whatever they please, basically. (Oh yeah, their last few albums feature a nice gentleman by the name of Jason Newsted on bass guitar.) This live demo was recorded during the peak of their progressive thrash period, and although you should listen to the studio albums first if you haven't heard them before, the sound is good enough to make the demo more than just a curiosity for collectors, and the set list features a brilliant Dead Kennedys cover, way before it was cool for metal bands to flaunt their punk/hardcore influences.

Various - Let There Be Singles. (The Imports)

This is an out-of-print double-CD collection of 7" singles released by Alternative Tentacles during the 90s - a time when the label moved past hardcore punk and was releasing all kinds of diferent stuff, represented here by several great noise-rock bands (Kepone, Pachinko, Buzzkill), a few Ramones members side projects (C.J. Ramone's Los Gusanos and Joey Ramone's not-that-hot collaboration with his brother, Sibling Rivalry), a couple of uneventful punk rock'n'roll bands (Tribe 8, White Trash Debutantes - notable at least for the lyric "Vanilla Ice is the only person capable of insulting two races just by opening his mouth" - I paraphrase but I have no intention of listening to the song again), some weird ethnic-y stuff (Life After Life, the excellent Radiopuhelimet), and two guises of Nomeansno (a fun Hanson Brothers single and a regular NMN one, unfortunately containing the same versions of songs readily available on the "Sex Mad" LP). All in all it's a rather schizophrenic listen and I don't think anyone will like all the bands on offer here, but if you're into a noisier and weirder take on punk rock, you should at least like some of it.

Napalm Death - Noise for Music's Sake, Pt. 2

A photo from a fantastic show at Zagreb's KSET club which I had the pleasure of attending.

Some years ago Earache has released a great double-CD compilation by Napalm Death called "Noise for Music's Sake", the first CD of which contained a "best of" selection from their time with the label, and the second, more interesting one for the dedicated fan, a collection of harder to find stuff, including some EP's and many of the bonus tracks added to various re-releases of their studio albums. This album I have compiled completes the story with other non-album stuff that was left off of that compilation, and presents a neat overview of their career from the early harsh grindcore stuff ("The Curse" 7", split 7" with S.O.B., a couple of tracks exclusive to the "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" 7", and a live compilation track), through the somewhat tedious "commercial" phase (the "Greed Killing" and "Breed to Breathe" EP's, minus the tracks available on the "Diatribes" LP), up to the bonus tracks from limited editions of their two most recent releases, the unstoppable "Smear Campaign" and "Time Waits for No Slave", rounded off by an exclusive track for the Decibel magazine. All of this stuff is easily available across the Internet, but I wanted to have it all in one neat package, so here it is for your enjoyment - it does sag a bit in the middle ("Self Betrayal" is especially painful to a punk rocker's ears; surprisingly, I rather like the remix of "Contemptuous", even though I consider the mid-90s trend of techno remixes to be one of the most despicable ones in the whole history of metal), but most of it is essential music by one of the greatest extreme bands of all time.

Dusevna kataklizma - Demo

This is the first band I had friends in, back when I was in my sophomore year at high school, so that was a big deal for me then. The whole trip of listening to a song my friends wrote or watching them onstage playing - I was completely starstruck. Years passed, the band fell apart without accomplishing much, my cassette which contained their demo got lost, and it was a full decade before a friend unexpectedly found the demo on Soulseek, downloaded it and gave me a copy. Listening to it now, well, I'm afraid it's total crap. It sounded much better back when I didn't have other punk rock tapes to compare it to, ha ha. Still, it does hold some historical significance for my friends who I went to shows with back then, so if you remember the band, give it a listen for nostalgia's sake. If you don't, I don't really think there's a reason for you to catch up now. :)

MDC - Live in Maribor 9.10.1990.

Here's a semi-official live release by hardcore survivors MDC, recorded in Maribor, Slovenia in 1990 and released by the Slovenian Front Rock label. The sound is rather good, except for the vocals being too high in the mix (typical of soundboard recordings), and the lineup featuring Rancid's Matt Freeman on bass, whose overplaying I can't stand (I never understood how guitar heroics were banned from punk rock, while at the same time bass masturbators like that guy are hailed as gods). Also, our Slovenian pals were a bit cheap so they recorded the show on previously used tape, the result of which being that you can hear backwards music during the silent parts between songs. The set list is a bit strange, as this was recorded on the tour for the questionable "Metal Devil Cokes" album, but it does feature a few of the classics, alongside amusing covers of "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Wooly Bully" which you can't hear on any of their official releases, as far as I know. As a side note, the track listing on the LP only lists the last three songs with a "?", and I can understand not knowing the MDC song "Beat Somebody Up", but how can you not recognize fucking "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Wooly Bully"?! Bloody punk rockers.

Oh yeah, thanks to my friend Ivan Culjak for giving me this LP and a Dwarves 7" as an unexpected present.

The Steve McQueens - Complete Discography

I have a bit of an obsession about this band - perhaps it's because I got their debut LP at a time when I only owned 15 or 20 punk rock tapes, or because they never had any success and I have a soft spot for unloved bands (I want to give them all the love I think they deserve, but do not get), or just maybe they really were great? Their sound is ramshackle, anti-fi garage punk, recorded so badly that I frequently have trouble differing between the bass and the drums, or the lead guitar and the vocals, and I don't think I ever understood a single word that was not part of a song title (OK, I think the chorus of "I've Got BSE" goes "I've got BSE, oh yeah!" but that's about it). I love them all the more for it. They came from Germany in the mid-nineties, released an album on Incognito Records in 1996 and another one on Radio Blast Recordings in 1999, along with a few singles, a split single and a couple of compilation appearances; by the turn of the century they were no more. Here then is their complete recorded legacy, 42 songs ripped from vinyl, in the hope someone beside my friend Josip will finally agree with me and say "Man, this is some of the best punk rock ever!" Give them a chance!

Youth of Today - Live at Van Hall, Amsterdam 1989

I never got into the Straight Edge thing, not musically, even less ideologically. Actually, I come from a city of 105,000 people, with a rather active punk rock/hardcore scene, which has never had even one straight edger to be embarrassed about. However I really like the Youth of Today, whose "We're Not in This Alone" LP is in my eyes (ears?) an absolute hardcore masterpiece. This is a bootleg 7" taken from a show during their 1989 European tour, and it was given to me some ten or twelve years ago by my friend Srdjan, who plays drums in a Serbian hardcore band called Unison (in my opinion the best hardcore band in the Balkans - check them out). He was straight edge then (or wasn't? he's not now, so according to the sXe doctrine, he never was?) and I was very much NOT straight edge, I had never heard YOT, and listening to this 7", I didn't really become a fan - the sound quality is shit, as it was recorded by a member of the audience on a Walkman. Still, now that I enjoy their other stuff, I'm glad to have this, seeing how I rate rather low on the pretentious asshole scale of rare record possession, so hvala još jednom, Srđane! Of interest to you might be the two covers on side B, I mean SIDE XX, which have not appeared on other YOT recordings, at least not official ones.

Rijeka had had a very vital punk rock/new wave scene from the late seventies onwards, and the local "Ri Rock" sound has been hailed and loved so much that I think I am not alone when I say I'd had enough of Rijeka's daring, aggressive, arty and theatrical rock sound for about four lifetimes. Long and fruitful ones. This band, however, didn't really have anything to do with its hometown's rock tradition, which is good, and it was a good band, which is even better. They had appeared on two of the compilations I shared with you some posts earlier, and this is their sole official release, a seven song CD on Earwing Records/Carnival Tunes. From what I gather some of the guys from the band have continued with other bands and the band leader Marin now leads a reportedly great, but abysmally named group "Marinada". I haven't heard any of that stuff so I will shut up and leave you with this very good mini album.

Why stakla - Live

Here are four live recordings by the amazing Why stakla, the greatest "ekstreme guitar noise" rock band from Osijek, whose debut "Daj, dodji!" is one of my favourite albums of all time. Among these recordings is the complete show they played with Hammerhead in Ilirska Bistrica in 1995, and this is now my second favourite recording of theirs. It features a great cover of Big Black's "Fists of Love" (shame the channels get mixed up towards the end of the song but you can't have everything - where would you put it?). There are also three otherwise unreleased songs here, the sound quality is good to excellent, and all in all it's a great hour of music. Oh and by the way, the 1995 recording is their supporting show for the wonderful Hammerhead. They have also played with Killdozer and the Melvins so that should give you an idea of where they were coming from musically. Geographically they were coming from a place where people are much more likely to be Killdozer subject matter than Killdozer fans. I know, I grew up there. :D

Moving Targets - Three Singles

Here's a quick update for anyone who liked the previous post. The Moving Targets were a mid-80's Boston band who had a great pop-influenced-hardcore sound in the vein of later Hüsker Dü records. During their time together they have released four full-length LP's and three singles, which are collected here. Roughly half of these songs also appear on the LP's, and the other half are exclusive to the singles, be they new songs, alternate takes, or a Led Zeppelin cover. You can figure out for yourself which are which somewhere on the vast plains of the Internet.

Pegboy - Three Songs and Five Shows

I did have a cassette dub of this album for years, but this is not my tape. In the 90's in Croatia we had a war, not 100 min Type II cassettes from Japan.

Time and time and time again, I have put on a Pegboy album and decided that they were my favourite punk band of all time, above the Clash, even above the Ramones. Now, I realise these are heavy words, but so is this band - heavy on the ears, heavy on the liver, heavy on the heart. They are one of those bands whose lyrics you are never able to fully grasp, and sometimes you're not sure whether they're beautiful, pathetic or just stupid, but that's the point when you need to stop reading the lyrics sheet and blast the song at full volume, preferably in the company of a few good friends and/or beers. The band was formed in Chicago by former Naked Raygun guitarist John Haggerty, and while the two bands do share some similarities, I like to think of Pegboy as the heart to Naked Raygun's brains - more monotonous and blunt in their approach, but also (even) more emotionally satisfying. That's if you like punk rock performed by sad men, of course.

As all of their albums are available from most regular music outlets, I will share three songs which do not appear on either one of them, and five bootleg live shows; there is a sixth one available, "Live at the Metro" from 2004, but you can buy that on iTunes and support the band in doing so. OK I did steal it from some guy on SoulSeek but I'm allowed to do that because I am doing such great things for the punk rock scene on these here Internets. On to the track listings:

A good early show with passable sound quality and some great song choices. There are some problems with the sound of the vocals (sometimes the microphone seems to be distorting the sound, sometimes they're too loud, sometimes they're REALLY off-key) but I can live with that.

The first reunion show, at the Touch & Go records 25th anniversary festival in Chicago. The best sounding one from this collection (although the vocals could be a little quieter, and the guitar a little louder) and featuring wonderful stage banter about Larry being, alternately: 1) drunk off his ass at 1 PM, 2) fat, old and ugly, and 3) utterly unsuccessful in his musical career. THIS is how you speak before an audience. If you don't want to bother with all these shows, make sure you get at least this one and the 2000 one.

Various - Feathers, Air Freshener and La Bum

These three compilations came out in the second half of the Nineties, and together they present a very interesting overview of Croatia's noise, post-rock, art and "whatever the hell Zhel is playing" scenes, along with a few foreign guests like Guapo and K.K. Null of Zeni Geva. Listening to them with these ears, after finishing college and giving up on tons of progressive, complex and artistically important musics, I find myself not understanding a lot of this stuff, but finding all the bands I used to consider amazing - well, still amazing. Dispersed across these three discs there are gems like the cult noise-rock bands from Osijek, Cog and Why stakla; beautiful post-rock of Lunar (on the "La Bum! Album" CD you will find the track "Basta Rhymes", which was supposed to be the first track on their "There Is No 1" album - which, surprisingly, does not contain track no. 1); noble noise of Croatian ex-patriots Gone Bald (I believe this song is the last one they recorded in their original, all-Croatian lineup, and also the only one sung completely in Croatian); passionate punk rock of Koprivinica's Overflow; and so on. Mule - Live Athens

Check out the town "Hell" just SE of Lansing. Is that what the song's about?

Here's something not easily found - a great-sounding bootleg of a complete show by the incredible noise-blues-country combo Mule, recorded at the most amazing time of their career, after releasing the self-titled debut LP and its follow-up EP, "Wrung" (I derive this from the setlist - there's no data on when exactly this was recorded, but when you listen to it you'll learn that it was near Christmas, and also that it was bassist Kevin Munro's birthday; probably in 1992 or 1993? I also have no idea whether it was recorded in Athens, Georgia, or Athens, Greece, but I'd go with the former. Should've taught R.E.M. a thing or two!). The playing is excellent, the double vocals of guitarist P.W. Long and bassist Munro are even more drunkenly passionate than on the studio recordings, and the setlist covers most of the debut LP and half of "Wrung" - now, if any loser on the Internet were allowed to give his worthless opinions on songs written by FUCKING MULE, I'd say that maybe they had picked the wrong half of "Wrung" and should have found space for "Now I Truly Understand"; luckily this is not the case, so I'll just shut the fuck up and enjoy this incredible musical artifact.

Very Expensive Porno Movie - Postfucking Happiness

I bought this CD in 1999, at the "Zivjeti kvalitetnije" anarcho-crust festival in the hills near Pozega, Croatia (also the site of the wonderful Dirty Old Festival, in its 12th year now!). I remember how I arrived at the festival site, went straight to the record stalls, and spent all the money I have brought for the next two days on: one cassette (I don't remember which one), one fanzine called Zedno uho, one 7" record (the Red Aunts one), and this here CD. After two days of begging strangers for a drop of mayonnaise, stealing cigarettes out of people's car trunks and getting wasted on homemade brandy, I came home and was finally able to enjoy this fine peace of Dutch-via-Croatia noise rock art. The great artwork containing MS Paint sketches, hardcore porn movie stills and violent children's poems is a bonus you won't be getting here, but I will share the music, which is, well, a very good aural representation of the artwork.

Brkovi are an outrageous folk-metal-punk mindfuck from Zagreb. They have two albums out, which you can order from their web site; this is an early live recording featuring their original singer, who is not in the lineup anymore. You can download two more of their early shows from this blog; they're all great-sounding, incredibly fun and feature loads of songs which were never recorded in a studio, thus preserving them from undeserved obscurity.

Various - Jamaican Ska - 18 Original Jamaican Ska Classics

I am a big fan of the original 1960's ska and rocksteady, and this cheap compilation has made me such about a decade ago. The above picture is not the artwork included with the CD - it is a low budget venture with generic artwork and no liner notes, and its obscurity made it impossible to even find a picture of it on the Internet. All tracks are great - my favourite would probably be the Skatalites saxophonist Tommy McCook's beautiful instrumental "The World Needs Love" (and it does), but none of the others are too far behind it, so low budget or no low budget, the disc is a nice introduction to this wonderful music. U-Roy's tender "Wear You to the Ball", the Ethiopians' elegant "Everything Crash" and Justin Hinds and the Dominoes' sweet "Here I Stand" are also highlights. Enjoy!

Sonny Vincent's Shotgun Rationale - Cocked

Sonny Vincent was the singer and guitar player for the New York punk rock band The Testors back at the tail end of the '70s, a participant in the original CBGBs/Max's Ramones-Television-Talking Heads scene, who never got a break in the mainstream - not even the punk rock mainstream these bands had created. Unstable lineups, disagreements with record companies, rock'n'roll lifestyle and jail time had all affected his unfortunate career, although his music alone should in my opinion be considered nothing less than classic. The Testors' material (mostly unreleased during the band's tenure) has been compiled several times over the years, most recently by Swami Records on an amazing double-CD/double-LP compilation which is still in print, meaning you really should buy it. After the break-up of the Testors he has led a long solo career, playing with probably every great punk rock musician ever (they are too numerous to list here, but we're talking members of the Velvet Underground, the MC5, The Stooges, The Dead Boys, The Voidoids, Hüsker Dü, The Replacements, The Devil Dogs, The Damned, Television, Black Flag, Rocket from the Crypt, Sonic Youth, The Lazy Cowgirls, Dumbell, etc., etc.), and released a number of albums on various record labels, some still in print, some not. This CD came out back in 1995 on a German label whose name is on the back of the CD case which is all the way on the opposite side of the room, but anyway, it's not in print anymore and you can only find it second hand, and with a hefty price, too. I couldn't find it on blogs or torrents either, so I'm uploading it here for your potential enjoyment. The material is two thirds re-recordings of old Testors tunes, with great playing and sparkling clean production, and one third then-new songs written for the then-current band. It varies from poppy ballads to almost hardcore scorchers, and is in my opinion one of his most consistent collections. Download it below and then go to Interpunk.com, type "Testors" in the little search box and buy the Swami compilation and/or the more encompassing 1972-2002 anthology which covers almost his whole career.

The Swindle - Prevara

This is an obscure gem from the Pula scene, and as almost every band ever to come out of Pula was great, so was this one. The genre is rockish, midtempo punk, with great tunes and somewhat vague lyrics which I don't mind and neither should you. The tape was recorded in late 1990 and early 1991, and released on KUD Idijoti's guitar player Sale Veruda's label, Bonaca. I have only heard about this band once, and had never heard them until I found a copy of the tape in a second hand store a few years ago. Internet searches reveal next to nothing about this band, so for what it's worth, this is an exclusive - hope you like it.

KUD Idijoti - MEGA IDIJOT COLLECTION

If you know anything about Croatian/ex-Yugoslavian punk rock, you know that KUD Idijoti are the greatest band we ever had. They have lots of LP's and singles, all of them great; two legitimately released live tapes, both great; three demo tapes, all great. All this stuff you can find on other blogs, but I have found six of their German shows dating from 1989 to 1994, recorded by the mysterious "Barny Trouble" (whoever and wherever you are - thanks, mate!), and to my knowledge, unavailable anywhere else. Just some of the highlights: the "Disco Is Not Dead/Daddy Cool" medley; the hardcore version of "Darwill"; all the riotously funny stage banter in rudimentary English; and of course, all the brilliant music. Most shows are complete (the Bonn one isn't), some sound excellent, some quite good, some not quite good - the "Darwill" intro on the Hofingen show sounds like Nomeansno playing Cock Sparrer's "Because You're Young" - oh what a wonderful proposition! - but everything is worth having and hearing. So without much further ado...

Komunalni otpad - Demo + live

This is my best friends' punk band from the nineties. I haven't listened to this stuff for almost ten years, and listening to it now, I have to admit that it sounded much better IN the nineties. The playing on the demo is all over the place, the sound quality of the later live tracks is rather poor, and the earlier live tracks have both of those problems. Still, I can find enjoyment in these songs, especially the best ones, like "Siromastvo", "Kisna glista" or "Demokracija". This band is a part of the history of Osijek punk scene and its music should be available, so here it is.

Pucka kuhinja - Demo + Live in Djakovo

Unfortunately I don't have access to a working scanner, so this is the best I could do with a digital camera.

Pucka kuhinja were a fun punk rock band from Osijek. They played during the mid- to late nineties, then stopped, then started playing again a few years ago with a couple replacement members. They play much better now, which makes them a less great band in my opinion - I like this more amateurish stuff much better. They have a new CD titled "Jel karas ti sta?" which you can probably get somewhere, but this is the original demo tape and a short live recording from 1996, taken from old cassettes. The songs' subject matter ranges from losing one's liver to homemade brandy to rewriting the Lord's prayer as a call to glue sniffing, with a few stops in between at diseases, shit, and old women selling their prosthetic limbs so they could afford combat boots and mohawk haircuts. Why can't the Arcade Fire write about such worthy topics?

Hladno pivo - Demo

Hladno pivo were Croatia's premier punk rock band in the nineties, and now they are the most popular rock band. This is their first demo tape, which you can find on many other blogs, too, but this version that I have ripped from a tape of mysterious origin contains five bonus practice space recordings, which I haven't seen anywhere else. I don't know how the sound quality of this rip compares to the other ones circulating on the web, but you can download the other version from the Pankerijada blog and hear for yourself. That blog also has a bootleg recording of their show supporting the Ramones in '94 - the band members claim to have been scared shitless by the fact they were playing with the Ramones, and that they just wanted to get the show over with as soon as possible, so this is probably the fastest HP performance you have ever heard (and ever WILL hear, as they now play all the old songs in half-speed reggae-ska-trumpet-aided-audience-participation-cabaret versions). So check out that stuff too!

The Red Aunts were a wonderfully ramshackle female punk rock quartet who released five full length LP's during their existance, the second and third of which ("Bad Motherfucken 40 o-z" and "#1 Chicken") are absolutely essential if you like this kind of stuff. This seven incher was released on the Sympathy for the Record Industry label in 1993 and contains four exclusive tracks, the first of which is a Clash cover. It is now out of print but you can (and should) find it on eBay for a not-too-ridiculous price, however here is the MP3 version if you're not into vinyl gravedigging.

New Bomb Turks - The Biggest Combo

Most of the New Bomb Turks' early singles and compilation appearances are collected on the incredible "Pissing Out the Poison" compilation. Most of their final non-album material is collected on the rather good "Switchblade Tongues, Butterknife Brains" compilation. But only some of the material released between those two eras is compiled on the rather shitty "Big Combo" disc, which included a fraction of the rare stuff, alongside readily available album tracks. I had this CD, hated it, and finally sold it. So this is an improved version, which contains all the exclusive tracks from it, mixed with an abundance of other singles, covers and live recordings, and even some early stuff that "Pissing Out the Poison" omitted. Kvaka 22 - Kvaka 22

Kvaka 22 ("Catch 22" in Croatian) were a noise rock band from Zagreb who released this tape on the great "Kekere Aquarium" label back in 1994. I don't know anything else about them, and don't even like this tape very much, but maybe someone will be happy to have this - I don't think it's available anywhere else on the Web, and the transfer from tape was done by me a long time ago. The sound quality of the tape I had wasn't great (who knows what generation the dub was), so it's not great in MP3 either. Sounds similar to Santiago Durango's post-Big Black "Arsenal" project, if memory serves me right.

Naked Raygun - Live at WRUW

I wonder how many times I will use the phrase "best band ever" on this blog. Today the best band ever is Naked Raygun of Chicago, who you should listen to every day or you have, to paraphrase Mark Prindle, "been living your life incorrectly - go back and start again". I fell in love with them after hearing their song "I Remember" on a Homestead Records compilation back when I was in high school, a perfect pop song if there ever was one - you won't hear it on this live session for a Cleveland radio station, but you will hear many other incredible tunes, starting and ending with their two "hits", "Treason" and "I Don't Know". This is a live recording but the sound quality is excellent, and the set includes their cover of "Folsom Prison Blues", which I have not seen anywhere else. Enjoy!

Cog were a brilliant noise rock band from Osijek, Croatia, playing in the vein of late '80s and early '90s Touch & Go and AmRep bands, sounding most similar to Steve Albini's later bands, Shellac and (especially) Rapeman. They played for a decade before finally releasing their first album, at which point they decided to call it quits. I think I have seen them live more than any other band, some 15 or 20 times, but I am still sad for not being able to see them play again. When I started going to shows at the age of fifteen or sixteen, a time when my musical taste began with the Sex Pistols and ended with the Exploited, I didn't really like them, but I felt obliged to go and see them every time, because they were officially "a great band". I remember watching them and waiting for a friend to say "let's go take a piss" so we could somehow forget to return to the front of the stage and continue enjoying beer and discussions on whether the Sex Pistols or the Exploited are the best band ever. Luckily for me, they hung around long enough for me to start liking them, then loving them, then becoming friends with them. Their drummer Antun, who played on the CD but not on this compilation, now plays guitar in two other bands, This Day Will Burn (not to be confused with an American band with the same - in my opinion rather stupid :) - name), and Sizif; the other two members, bass player Dindo and guitar player and vocalist Mario, do not play any more, as far as I know. This is a compilation of all their recordings apart from that CD, namely two demo tapes ("Puppet Play" from 1996 and "Beef Eater", I believe from 1997), a few compilation appearances, a promo EP recorded shortly before the album, and a live recording of a song which was not released anywhere else. All of the recordings except for the live song feature their original drummer, Larson. If you like this stuff you can buy the CD from Moonlee Records for a meager sum of five Euros.

This is a compilation of various single B-sides, compilation appearances and guest spots Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead has done over the last two decades. There is already one officially released compilation of Lemmy's work, a double CD by the name of "Damage Case - The Anthology", which I heartily reccommend. However there is an abundance of similar material not included in that compilation, so I wanted to rectify this.
