Sepultura - Arise Rough Mixes

This is a rip of a rare LP that was pressed for the 1991 Rock in Rio festival, containing early mixes of the whole "Arise" album. The sound quality is perfect, too, so I guess nothing can go wrogn with today's "tape"... Oh except for the fact that this recording sounds basically identical to the officially released version. I haven't compared the songs one by one, but after loving and cherishing this album for 20 years, I think it's been engrained in my brain sufficiently that I can remember every riff, solo and vocal effect by heart. The only difference I was able to detect is that "Dead Embryonic Cells" lacks its intro, so if you really hated those 20 seconds of atmospheric sounds, today's your lucky day. Otherwise, add this to your collection, listen to it once and then put it away - that's what I'll do.

Samson - Telephone/Mr. Rock'n'Roll

Clive Burr, the drummer on the first three Iron Maiden albums, has passed away today after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. In every picture, interview or live video I saw of him he had the most infectious smile in all of metal (yes, more than even Barney Greenaway's!); I've obviously never met him but he seemed like such a nice guy that I can't help feeling sadness for his sad and premature ending. He was also probably the most rockin' drummer Maiden ever had, not to take anything away from Nicko of course. Here are the first two singles by his first band, Samson (the same Samson Bruce Dickinson later also deserted for Maiden), which are his first published recordings. This is before Bruce's era in Samson, so the vocals are handled by guitarist Paul Samson himself, and the general vibe of the recordings is somewhere between (very) early NWOBHM and regular 70's rock, with maybe even a little pub rock thrown in (the first track, "Telephone", reminds me of Dr. Feelgood in a few places). Rest in peace mate, and thanks for the smiles.

Atrophy - Demos + Live in Toronto 30.01.1989

Seeing as some of the most popular downloads from my blog are the metal bands - the Voivod demo, the Slayer bootleg, the Napalm Death rarities and so on - I guess I should feature more metal stuff and give the ex-Yugoslavian punk obscurities a rest from time to time. Trouble is, metal as a genre is VERY well documented on thousands of other blogs, and I'm really having trouble finding something which you can't get someplace else. Even this collection I'm uploading today is easy enough to compile from a few different torrent sources, but due to the nature of torrents and their relatively short lifespan, I hope I can provide it a more permanent home. So, Atrophy were a mid-to-late '80s thrash band from Tombstone, Arizona, who have released two official LP's, which are both still in print as CD reissues; this material however, features their six-song demo "Chemical Dependency" (an excellent tape, by the way), two more songs from another promo tape, and a shoddy sounding live show just for the hell of it. Everything but the promo songs was included on a bootleg CD called "Product of the Bong", but I have updated the "Chemical Dependency" songs with copies from a better sounding source.

Iron Maiden - Maiden Japan Fan Club Edition

All Iron Maiden fans know about the brilliant 1981 live EP "Maiden Japan", recorded on a Japanese tour and featuring the last Maiden recordings ever to feature the wonderful Paul DiAnno on vocals; however, many of them do not know that the whole show from which these recordings originate was released some years ago, in the form of a very limited-edition fan-club-only CD. The disc features seventeen excellent-sounding tracks and the original, quickly rejected cover art with DiAnno's severed head; I've also added a second disc of early EP's, demos and compilation appearances to complete the picture. You can find all this stuff elsewhere online, but here it's all in one package, with some additional tweaking (i.e. the "bonus" 8+ minutes version of "Drifter" is most easily available from a slowed-down rip; here it's restored to its original speed), and a recent photo of Paul DiAnno to haunt you in your dreams:

D.R.I. - I.M.Y.T. Compilation

D.R.I. are one of my favourite bands in at least two genres - hardcore punk and thrash metal. I've seen them twice in the last year or so, and both shows were total brain pummeling. What a wonderful band. Here I'm sharing three hard-to-find songs of theirs - "Against Me" (a demo recorded way back in 2004 - a long, long time ago, when music was much better, and even this song's namesake band didn't suck!), "Hide Your Eyes" and "Out of Mind" (cassette and LP bonus tracks from the "Definition" album, which should supposedly be re-released one fine day, and that is of course the day I take them down off the blog). In order not to have an eight minute download, I've added two so-so bootlegs from the mid-Eighties (both with unexceptional sound, one incomplete - but the other from a show with SLAYER! wooohoooo!), alongside a rather often circulated demo, bootlegged as "Dirtiest Filthiest Demos", if memory serves. The sound quality is shit but there are fun versions of "Johnny B. Goode" and "Louie Louie" at the end, plus a few songs which might be otherwise unreleased (the bootlegger didn't recognize them and neither did I, but then again, early D.R.I. isn't exactly "Sandinista!" in terms of eclecticism or song lengths - it all sounds the same, but it's an excellent same!). Carcass - Live at Terasa Verudela, Pula, Croatia 05.05.1992. - VIDEO

Here is the complete video of the first foreign band playing in Croatia since its declaration of independence and the beginning of the war, which was still raging when Carcass came to Pula. You can grab the audio of the show, along with the set list and a few pictures, here - it's a great blog ran by the guy who had recorded this show almost twenty years ago. Also check out a nice amateurish interview done by Croatian television here. Oh yeah, the opening acts were bands called HATRÖSS and CENOTAPH - I wonder what they sounded like? :)
