Regoc - Just So

A child's drawing of the band's namesake, a gentle giant from a children's tale.
I was surprised to find out that this excellent (and, sadly, sole) LP from Rijeka's noise-rock purveyors Regoc was not available for download in the "blogosphere". The only links I was able to find were dead for a long time, but the record's cult status actually surpasses its scarcity; tons of 100 € records are readily available for download in multiple locations, so one should expect a 10 € record which does enjoy some notoriety to pop up everywhere. Anyway, I'm glad to be able to make this music available again, as it is no less interesting than most of its celebrated contemporaries in the Touch & Go/AmRep circles. This post adds the only other officially released song by the band, whose members later featured in the long-running Very Expensive Porno Movie (the bonus song being "Blimp" from the "Best of Indie Rock - Made in Croatia" compilation). I hope you like it and rush to Discogs to grab yourself a copy!

The LP sleeve is great, too.

FNC Diverzant vs. 5 Minutes to Steve - Split Tape

Cult tape from the '90s Croatian punk underground, featuring two bands that have also appeared together on the "Tribute to Our Parents" compilation (available elsewhere on this blog). Nice melodic punk typical for its time, complete with an unfortunate ska part right in the first song on side one. The FNCD side has been available in multiple places on the Internet, but the 5MTS side has been elusive for a long time; here's the whole thing your enjoyment.

Noise Slawonische Kunst - Noise Slawonische Kunst + Live OKS

This record is a cult document from the 1990's war in Croatia, or more precisely its Slavonija region and my hometown Osijek. The musicians who comprised this ad-hoc band came from several different Osijek bands of the time, some of which I have shared or will share on this blog (Die Hausers, No Passaran, Glad, Nahson Booz); the conditions in which these recordings were made are hard to understand to me, since I was a 10-year old kid while this was happening, but I did spend those ugly war years in the midst of it all so I can at least imagine. I don't feel really competent to retell this story, which can be found on the Internet (only in Croatian, though: here and here), so I will just throw in a few facts - the LP was recorded in November 1991 in the "Pauk" hall in Zagreb, while the live recording is from Osijek, probably around the same time in 1991, from - again, probably - the OKS club. The vinyl rip is not the greatest you could imagine, but it's good enough, and the live show sounds amazing. The extra track, a cover of "Lily Marlene", is of unknown origin (to me at least). Recently, a documentary movie was made about these recordings; it was directed by the singer, File, so I believe it is as truthful an account as possible - but unfortunately I haven't had a chance to see it yet.

I have actually owned a copy of this VERY rare record, but was foolish enough to exchange it for the triple LP "Sandinista!" by the Clash - now, after hearing it again after some years, I'm really sad I haven't kept it, because it is an important - perhaps THE most important - artifact of my city's alternative music scene. The music varies from dark synth-pop to angry noise-rock, but to my ears it comes closest to what Die Hausers were doing - unsurprisingly, as the vocalist, guitar and bass players came from that band, and many of these songs were later (perhaps previously, too?) performed and recorded by them. The lyrics, even with all the dark imagery, are actually quite life-affirming, considering the bleak times they were written in - see picture below.

I'm not quite sure, but I do believe this photo was taken right in front of the place where the live show was recorded, and in the same year. It's my (broader) neighbourhood, too.

Hladno pivo - Live in Split 25.03.1994.

This is, judging by the stage banter, the first show Hladno pivo ever played in Croatian second largest city, Split. It's a rather good sounding soundboard recording, although a bit marred by the years (decades?) it must have spent on a cassette. It's also sadly incomplete, and the break comes right after a great introduction story (if you speak Croatian, of course) whose ending we will probably never hear. Still, there's almost 45 minutes of music here, and it's a great document of early '90s Croatian punk scene, when even the guys in Hladno pivo thought they'd always play harsh punk and would never need "people who like ballads" at their shows... Enjoy!

Dik O'Braz - Zedj

The sole album from a Croatian band from the early Nineties, who played a Motörhead-influenced brand of punky hard rock with lyrics mostly about drinking. A nice little release, although there was another band competing for the title of "Croatian Motörhead" during the same time period, who even had a great version of "Ace of Spades" with lyrics in Croatian, and whom I liked better - they were called Klajbas and came from the town of Krizevci. Teh Internets are unfortunately ignorant of their existence, and I'd very much like to share their album here, so if anyone happens to have it, hook me up! I've lost my tape years ago, sadly.

Hladno pivo - Promo 7'' + Live

Here's a mega-rare single by Croatia's once premier punk band, which was only released as a promo to radio stations, in what I imagine must be a very limited quantity - I don't know the numbers though. It features two of the songs that later came out on their second album, "G.A.D.", but these versions are exclusive to the single. Especially interesting is the first song, "Sedma noc", which has an outro part that was cut from the album version - whether it was for the better or for worse is for you to judge for yourself. I've also added two more live songs which were released on an obscure German compilation (that's probably why they chose the two songs sung in German).

Track listing:

1. Sedma noc (demo) (1:55)
2. Diznilend (demo) (2:02)
3. Niemals (live) (1:23)

Various - Tribute to Our Parents

This was one of the first independently released CD compilations of Croatian underground bands, along with the few I have posted before, and from the same two great record labels - Earwing and Anubis records. It is also the one I personally like the least, but lots of my friends loved it, so what do I know? The first band on the CD is Analena, who have over time become one of the most amazing (post)-punk bands here, but these are early recordings with the original singer, and find the band in a rather embryonic state. Next up are two "melodic hardcore" bands, FNC Diverzant and 5 Minutes to Steve, who also shared a split cassette before this CD. 5MTS never released anything else, while FNCD are still playing, albeit rather recreationally. I prefer seing them live and hanging out with them to listening to these recordings, however. The last band is Paruzija, who were a Christian band if I'm not mistaken, and I really can't get any enjoyment from either their lyrics or music. To each his own, I guess...

Death Disco - Demos

Death Disco were a Croatian post-punk band based in Zagreb, hailing from Split, and sounding like they were from Belgrade. They reminded me most of the legendary Yugo band Sarlo akrobata, perhaps a bit faster. They were active throughout the first half of the '00s, released one album, and quit soon after - which was a pity because they were getting better all the time and could have become a really great band; as it is, they were always fun live, and had some really cool songs, some of which were never released but are preserved in the form of the first half of this collection of demos. Along with the unreleased stuff I've added the two demos that were available from the band before the release of the album, one of which is a kind of a test run for the album, and the other an embryonic version of the band that sounded completely different than the final version. If my memory serves, the "band" at this point consisted only of the bassist and the guitar player, and the tunes were constructed via e-mails from Split to Zagreb and back. This demo does have its moments (and a great song title in "Buena Vista Death Dub"), but they've gotten much better when they became a real band. Nowadays, the bassist plays in a synth-pop band called Hemendex, the guitar player lives in Amsterdam, and the drummer is a writer with six published books (as of 2012).

KUD Idijoti - Necu da radim za dolare EP

This is a curious, semi-bootleg release, about which you can read more at the sadly retired blog that has originally posted it, Audio Heaven. Since all of its files have been taken down by Mediafire, I'm reuploading it here, so it can still be available for your dining and dancing pleasure. The last three songs are pretty uneventful, but the first two are alternate versions of a couple of great tracks from Idijoti's debut LP, "Mi smo ovdje samo zbog para", which are as great as the officially released ones. Enjoy!

By the way, the guy who used to run Audio Heaven now has a new blog, Pula Rock City, which features tons of rare recordings by bands from Pula; if you are interested in the rock sounds from that city, which you should be, go ahead and explore it.

Peach Pit - Live in KSET 2004

Picture taken at same venue, but five years later; stolen from terapija.net
A high-quality live recording of Croatian math-rock masters Peach Pit playing the KSET club in Zagreb. For fans of Don Caballero and similar bands, which are to my ears usually more "interesting" than "enjoyable". Peach Pit have lost a guitar player since this recording, and this actually made them more... let's say understandable to me, but if you're a fan of the genre, you should be impressed by what they are doing here.

KUD Idijoti - Zbrka pjesama (Tusta 1955-2012)

Branko Črnac Tusta, the singer of Croatia's (and earlier, Yugoslavia's) longest-lived and best-loved punk rock band KUD Idijoti, has passed away two days ago, after battling cancer for almost two years. It's hard to explain even to myself exactly what this means to me. He and the band he was fronting for 27 years have been the entry point to punk rock for almost every punk fan in Yugoslavia aged between 13 and what, 43? He has been openly and passionately voicing his support for antifascist and antinationalist views during every moment of his long (but still not long enough) career; even, or perhaps especially, during times when this was least desirable by the majority. He was always present, always available and always approachable; Facebook is right now flooded with what seems to be a picture of every kid alive next to him in a club, at a show, in a restaurant or on the street. I don't think I have ever visited his town of Pula without passing him by somewhere on a street, and feeling happy and proud that I KNOW and FEEL and SHARE the amazing music he was making. The songs he sang contain more love for People than any national anthem ("people", not "A people"); and I believe they'll last longer, too. Their use of the red five-point star has gotten them in trouble both when it was a beloved state symbol, and later, when it was a hated reminder of a communist past; I think the reason was that they understood the symbol better and have done it more justice than either of their prosecutors. I have seen lots of their shows, and was never less than overwhelmed after they finished. I have seen them in small clubs, at huge open-air festivals and also at a neighbourhood celebration in a park between buildings; and no matter whether I paid 5, 450, 70 or 0 for the show, no matter whether they played with D.O.A. (who reportedly insisted the headliner/support roles be reversed, fearing appearing on stage after them), Kraftwerk, Anthrax or Franz Ferdinand, their show was always the best one of any evening. I have never had second thoughts about traveling for 200-300 km to see a second Idijoti show in a month; now that they are, incredibly and unbelievably, gone, I'm sorry I didn't go see them two times a week. I know I am rambling, but it's so hard to come to terms with the end of a thing, a relationship if you will, that has been here for me since I was fifteen, and for others, well, basically since before I was born; and that has provided me with reassurance, love and happiness through countless tapes, LP's, singles, CD's, shows, bootleg MP3's, archive YouTube clips, interviews, quotes, singalongs at shows, parties, beaches and parks, and a few exchanged words and a handshake, just to have a little feel of the person behind all the aforementioned. Tusta was not a saint and I don't want or need to paint such a picture of him; we are all faulted, all shorter and uglier than our ideals, but for me seeing a regular guy reach for the stars, be they red and five-pointed or otherwise, means much more than contemplating a faultless imaginary friend of a god, saint or angel variety. What Tusta has been doing for most of his life will always remain a significant part of who I am and who many others, similar or different to me, are; and for creating and nurturing this part of me, I am forever grateful.

With this post I am including a scan of the original KUD Idijoti lyrics book, "Zbrka pjesama", from 1988. Perhaps it'll help some of the future singalongs be more accurate wording-wise, now that Tusta cannot lead anymore.

And if you need a reminder on how great they were, there are six excellent old shows in this earlier post.

Brze banane - Brze banane

Here's an incredibly shitty "pop-rock" band from the last days of Yugoslavia. Puder - Ples divljih svinja

Yet another noise-rock band from Croatia, Puder were a three-piece from Split who have released this one tape during their existence (and appeared on the Feathers, Wood & Aluminium compilation). The tape features nine songs, but this archive adds another five rehearsal tracks, plus an unfortunate cover-of-a-cover (Kraftwerk's "The Model" via Big Black - it's not a bad version, but quite pointless nevertheless). Their sound is standard issue Amrep, but the tunes are quite good and it's not a bad listen.

Or, at least the first two songs are: turns out that Dare to Go, a band I knew nothing about, was created from the remnants of Hell's Bells, and this anthology-type cassette contains the two songs from the A-side of the "Apage Satanas!" EP. I still don't enjoy those songs too much, mostly because of the lyrics and the vocals, although the bass playing is pretty solid, and for me the highlight of this version of the band. As for the later DTG material, it's less hardcore and more "alternative", but not in the post-Nirvana polished grunge sense - this was still the EARLY Nineties. The lyrics are in English now and the vocal is less prominent in the mix; I'm not sure if the singing is better than before, but this singer doesn't grate on my nerves like the original one did. Dare to Go later evolved into another band called Modrobradi, but I don't have any of their recordings to share; there's a Myspace page for you to check out if you are interested.

Hell's Bells - Apage Satanas!

Hell's Bells were a hardcore/punk band from Zagreb, Croatia (then Yugoslavia), who released this sole 7" EP in 1991; that's about all I know about them. Here's a rip of my copy of the 7".

Track listing:

1. Probisvjeti (2:11)
2. Krv nije votka (2:53)
3. Mojca (2:15)
4. Kosmar (2:22)

Bambi Molesters - Coastal Disturbance EP

The Bambi Molesters are today probably the most critically-acclaimed surf band in the world, having such outspoken fans/collaborators as Peter Buck or Chris Eckman; quite a feat for a small band from a small Croatian town like Sisak. This 7" EP, released back in 1997 by the Plastic Bomb fanzine from Germany, is their second release (there was a tape called "Bambi Molesters Play Out of Tune" before, released by Slusaj najglasnije/Listen Loudest, which might be still available on a CD-R reissue from the same label), and features two instrumentals and two tracks which feature singing; after hearing them, it's really no wonder they gave up on singing completely, haha. Anyway, the recordings are charming and the single is currently not available anywhere, either in physical or virtual form, so here is a rip from my vinyl.

Track listing:

1. Coastal Disturbance (2:07)
2. She's So Soft Inside (2:21)
3. Wanganui (1:41)
4. 1000 Songs (2:43)

Gipss - Uh!

In relation to yesterday's post - it turns out that my girlfriend has a copy of the Gipss full-length CD, so here's that, too, for your slightly lesser enjoyment. Listening to the two releases back to back it's obvious that the album is much less "noise rock" than "RI rock", which to my ears feels to have aged rather more poorly. Still, it's not a bad album, some songs are quite good (I especially like the title song "Uh!", which has not appeared on the EP before, like most of the other better songs on the album - albeit in different versions), and it should be preserved as a document; so here it is!

Track listing:

1. Slika (3:56)
2. Zemlja (1:51)
3. Raspuce (2:46)
4. Sam (3:30)
5. Sijun (2:26)
6. Neda (2:13)
7. Program tvog kompjutera (3:21)
8. Djevojcica (2:29)
9. Uh! (Zig-zag) (2:46)
10. Nahrani me (2:41)
11. Sunce - Ride (7:11)
