KUD Idijoti - Necu da radim za dolare EP

This is a curious, semi-bootleg release, about which you can read more at the sadly retired blog that has originally posted it, Audio Heaven. Since all of its files have been taken down by Mediafire, I'm reuploading it here, so it can still be available for your dining and dancing pleasure. The last three songs are pretty uneventful, but the first two are alternate versions of a couple of great tracks from Idijoti's debut LP, "Mi smo ovdje samo zbog para", which are as great as the officially released ones. Enjoy!

By the way, the guy who used to run Audio Heaven now has a new blog, Pula Rock City, which features tons of rare recordings by bands from Pula; if you are interested in the rock sounds from that city, which you should be, go ahead and explore it.

Track listing:

1. Necu da radim za dolare (3:26)
2. Smrt (4:09)
3. Necu da radim za dolare (instrumental mix) (3:27)
4. Necu da radim za dolare (metal-dub extended remix) (8:27)

Peach Pit - Live in KSET 2004

Picture taken at same venue, but five years later; stolen from terapija.net
A high-quality live recording of Croatian math-rock masters Peach Pit playing the KSET club in Zagreb. For fans of Don Caballero and similar bands, which are to my ears usually more "interesting" than "enjoyable". Peach Pit have lost a guitar player since this recording, and this actually made them more... let's say understandable to me, but if you're a fan of the genre, you should be impressed by what they are doing here.

Bambi Molesters - Live at Radio 101 03.04.2004

Here's a live set the Bambi Molesters did for the Croatian Radio 101 back in 2004, with great quality sound. Hope you enjoy it!

What were the odds of finding a Croatian band's rare debut single at a Rezillos show in Los Angeles? And why didn't I buy it for $3, since it normally sells for close to $20?

Killdozer & Ritual Device - Split Single

As a sort of a sequel to the previous post, and as a great virtual bonus-single to this compilation, here's a beautiful 10" record that came out on Man's Ruin in 1995, and features Led Zeppelin covers as performed by Killdozer and Ritual Device. Both full-length songs are amazing; Killdozer's track even features harmonica solos, which is surely not common on a Killdozer recording. Right now I can't remember whether it's a first for them, or there might have been some way back on their "experimental" record, "Snakeboy" (still my favourite). As for the short "Hotdog", it was a throwaway tune to begin with, but hey, we can't all be Nine Pound Hammer.

Best. Cover. Ever.

Ritual Device - Trademark of Quality Years

Here's another cheapo purchase I made at Amoeba, a 500-copy limited edition live tour CD by the Omaha, NE noise rock band Ritual Device, priced at a ridiculous $1.99. The disc features nine cool dissonant tunes in the vein of The Jesus Lizard, with maybe a touch of Tad (or is it just because of the band name, shared with a Tad song title?) and perhaps Nomeansno. But to my ears it's mostly a bit tamer Jesus Lizard, by which I don't mean a copy, just similar-sounding contemporaries. If you're a fan of the late-80s/early-90s pigfuck sound, you should enjoy this. (As it happens, this very show is available on YouTube as a rather high-quality video recording, so you can watch it there, too.)

PS: The singer and the rest of the band later went on to feature in (Men of) Porn and Ravine, respectively.

A RD poster featuring the very same Kozik art The Offspring later used for their "Americana" album, and their singer supposedly wears a RD T-shirt in the video for "Keep 'em Separated"... Strange.

1. Introduction (2:35)
2. Cirmumcised (4:37)

Precious Wax Drippings - Ain't We a Wishin' Bunch

I'm back after a three-week trip to the USA, so I'll kick off the blog again with a nice little EP I chanced upon at the wonderful Amoeba music shop in Hollywood. Although the name of this band did sound familiar to me, I didn't really have any idea on how they might sound; but the price tag of $2.99 and the words "Chicago Recording Company" and "Iain Burgess" on the back of the sleeve convinced me to give it a chance. And sure enough, it's really nice old-style emo-indie-punk-rock, like so much of the stuff that was coming out of Chicago during the latter part of the '80s. It's only six songs long and the instrumental "Big Cheese" is no big cheese really, but it's quite enjoyable in that "nice band that never amounted to anything although they did deserve to" kind of way. Hope you like it!

Track listing:

1. Prayers (2:26)
2. Soulbait (1:55)

Descendents - Live at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2010

I think there's a T-shirt with this motif. I have to have it.
So, I'm using my honeymoon as an excuse to visit the wonderful Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, Texas, and to commemorate the joyous occasion, I'm sharing the Descendents' set from the 2010 edition of the festival. To my knowledge, this was their first show since 2002; they were replacement headliner for DEVO, who had to cancel due to their guitarist's hand injury. I do have a lot of respect for DEVO and I love their first LP, but man, I can't imagine how UN-disappointed I'd be if  I was among those waiting for DEVO's replacement, and then learning that it would be the fucking DESCENDENTS!

Anyway, the show is pristinely recorded, the setlist is great, and although Milo isn't exactly Pavarotti anymore, after a few songs of getting used to his singing you'll love it. You can watch the (almost) whole professionally recorded thing up on Vimeo, but for some strange reason, two songs (compare my track listing with the photo of the setlist) have been skipped. I've managed to find a listenable recording of "Clean Sheets" on YouTube and added it to the end of the show, but "Pervert" will probably remain lost forever. I hope the remaning 29 tracks will help you get over that one. =>

Track listing:

KUD Idijoti - Zbrka pjesama (Tusta 1955-2012)

Branko Črnac Tusta, the singer of Croatia's (and earlier, Yugoslavia's) longest-lived and best-loved punk rock band KUD Idijoti, has passed away two days ago, after battling cancer for almost two years. It's hard to explain even to myself exactly what this means to me. He and the band he was fronting for 27 years have been the entry point to punk rock for almost every punk fan in Yugoslavia aged between 13 and what, 43? He has been openly and passionately voicing his support for antifascist and antinationalist views during every moment of his long (but still not long enough) career; even, or perhaps especially, during times when this was least desirable by the majority. He was always present, always available and always approachable; Facebook is right now flooded with what seems to be a picture of every kid alive next to him in a club, at a show, in a restaurant or on the street. I don't think I have ever visited his town of Pula without passing him by somewhere on a street, and feeling happy and proud that I KNOW and FEEL and SHARE the amazing music he was making. The songs he sang contain more love for People than any national anthem ("people", not "A people"); and I believe they'll last longer, too. Their use of the red five-point star has gotten them in trouble both when it was a beloved state symbol, and later, when it was a hated reminder of a communist past; I think the reason was that they understood the symbol better and have done it more justice than either of their prosecutors. I have seen lots of their shows, and was never less than overwhelmed after they finished. I have seen them in small clubs, at huge open-air festivals and also at a neighbourhood celebration in a park between buildings; and no matter whether I paid 5, 450, 70 or 0 for the show, no matter whether they played with D.O.A. (who reportedly insisted the headliner/support roles be reversed, fearing appearing on stage after them), Kraftwerk, Anthrax or Franz Ferdinand, their show was always the best one of any evening. I have never had second thoughts about traveling for 200-300 km to see a second Idijoti show in a month; now that they are, incredibly and unbelievably, gone, I'm sorry I didn't go see them two times a week. I know I am rambling, but it's so hard to come to terms with the end of a thing, a relationship if you will, that has been here for me since I was fifteen, and for others, well, basically since before I was born; and that has provided me with reassurance, love and happiness through countless tapes, LP's, singles, CD's, shows, bootleg MP3's, archive YouTube clips, interviews, quotes, singalongs at shows, parties, beaches and parks, and a few exchanged words and a handshake, just to have a little feel of the person behind all the aforementioned. Tusta was not a saint and I don't want or need to paint such a picture of him; we are all faulted, all shorter and uglier than our ideals, but for me seeing a regular guy reach for the stars, be they red and five-pointed or otherwise, means much more than contemplating a faultless imaginary friend of a god, saint or angel variety. What Tusta has been doing for most of his life will always remain a significant part of who I am and who many others, similar or different to me, are; and for creating and nurturing this part of me, I am forever grateful.

With this post I am including a scan of the original KUD Idijoti lyrics book, "Zbrka pjesama", from 1988. Perhaps it'll help some of the future singalongs be more accurate wording-wise, now that Tusta cannot lead anymore.

And if you need a reminder on how great they were, there are six excellent old shows in this earlier post.

Galebovi - Two Little Girls

This 1989 tape by alternative rockers Galebovi ("Seagulls") from Osijek has been floating around the Internets for a while, but it seems to me that all the other links where it could previously be found are now dead, so I am sharing it here. It's nice enough late-80s rock, quite Serbian sounding to my ears, featuring lyrics by Osijek writer Delimir Resicki; fans of YU-alternative rock might like it.

Here's an incredibly shitty "pop-rock" band from the last days of Yugoslavia. If you're from these parts and the name "Mladen Burnac" means something to you, then you'll be happy to know that this is his first band's only record (and it's one record too many). If not, don't bother. It's crap yugo-pop with inane lyrics and cheesy music, only posted for historic trash value. I mean, look at them:

Oh yeah, the name of the band means "Fast Bananas". My god...

Puder - Ples divljih svinja

Yet another noise-rock band from Croatia, Puder were a three-piece from Split who have released this one tape during their existence (and appeared on the Feathers, Wood & Aluminium compilation). The tape features nine songs, but this archive adds another five rehearsal tracks, plus an unfortunate cover-of-a-cover (Kraftwerk's "The Model" via Big Black - it's not a bad version, but quite pointless nevertheless). Their sound is standard issue Amrep, but the tunes are quite good and it's not a bad listen.

Track listing:

I have no idea what happened to them later, but I still enjoy this tape.

Dare to Go - 1989-1993

So, two days after posting the Hell's Bells EP, I take out the next tape in my "to rip" box, and what do you know - it's Hell's Bells again. Or, at least the first two songs are: turns out that Dare to Go, a band I knew nothing about, was created from the remnants of Hell's Bells, and this anthology-type cassette contains the two songs from the A-side of the "Apage Satanas!" EP. I still don't enjoy those songs too much, mostly because of the lyrics and the vocals, although the bass playing is pretty solid, and for me the highlight of this version of the band. As for the later DTG material, it's less hardcore and more "alternative", but not in the post-Nirvana polished grunge sense - this was still the EARLY Nineties. The lyrics are in English now and the vocal is less prominent in the mix; I'm not sure if the singing is better than before, but this singer doesn't grate on my nerves like the original one did. Dare to Go later evolved into another band called Modrobradi, but I don't have any of their recordings to share; there's a Myspace page for you to check out if you are interested.

Future of the Left - Demos

The handsome Mr. Falkous at last week's Terraneo festival in Sibenik, Croatia.
Some members of Future of the Left used to be in another band. This other band disbanded seven years ago as of this writing; in the meanwhile, FOTL have released three full-length albums, one mini-album, one live album and a number of singles. Therefore, I will purposely NOT mention the other band, which admittedly was great, but not SO great as to warrant FOTL still being called "other band offshoot" or "ex-other band". When I saw them last, my fourth time total (London with Against Me!, Zagreb, Pula, Sibenik), they were still badgered by the audience to play the other band's most famous songs; and even though the charmingly impolite Falco retorted with "That's like me saying your ex-girlfriend has better tits - which she probably does", they obliged. I did enjoy those two songs, but I still thought it was time to let them stay in past and concentrate on the here and now. FOTL's six years of existence have fruited several songs that absolutely deserve the term "classics", yet they are still vital enough to surprise with unexpected moves on new releases; and as rarely as that happens to me, I actually wished that they would play MORE NEW STUFF (especially a song called "A History of Men", which you can find on their current LP, "Plot Against Common Sense" - which you should buy, along with the other two studio albums and the marvelous live disc). Well, since this blog does not feature commercially available recordings, I have to offer you some old stuff if I wish to share any FOTL music at all, which I do very much. Here then is a selection of their early demo stuff (the two songs that later featured as B-sides and can be bought as legal downloads have been omitted), alongside the more recent demos for "Plot Against Common Sense" and its predecessor, the "Polymers Are Forever" mini-album. Here's hoping for many more equally great ones.

Bambi Molesters - Coastal Disturbance EP

The Bambi Molesters are today probably the most critically-acclaimed surf band in the world, having such outspoken fans/collaborators as Peter Buck or Chris Eckman; quite a feat for a small band from a small Croatian town like Sisak. This 7" EP, released back in 1997 by the Plastic Bomb fanzine from Germany, is their second release (there was a tape called "Bambi Molesters Play Out of Tune" before, released by Slusaj najglasnije/Listen Loudest, which might be still available on a CD-R reissue from the same label), and features two instrumentals and two tracks which feature singing; after hearing them, it's really no wonder they gave up on singing completely, haha. Anyway, the recordings are charming and the single is currently not available anywhere, either in physical or virtual form, so here is a rip from my vinyl.

Gipss - Uh!

In relation to yesterday's post - it turns out that my girlfriend has a copy of the Gipss full-length CD, so here's that, too, for your slightly lesser enjoyment. Listening to the two releases back to back it's obvious that the album is much less "noise rock" than "RI rock", which to my ears feels to have aged rather more poorly. Still, it's not a bad album, some songs are quite good (I especially like the title song "Uh!", which has not appeared on the EP before, like most of the other better songs on the album - albeit in different versions), and it should be preserved as a document; so here it is!

Gipss - Vragoder e.p.

Gipss were a '90s alternative/noise-rock band from the city of Rijeka, who released this 7" EP and a full-length album before disappearing in obscurity. The album can be found elsewhere on the net is out of print and not available, just like this EP (I've just realised the album's been taken down from Mediafire - I'll try to find a copy or maybe even rip my tape), and differs from the EP by having female vocals; the singer from the EP has left the band by then, if I'm not mistaken. Their sound is in the vein of Croatian '90s alternative scene, so if you like the type of stuff that can be heard on "Feathers, Wood and Aluminium" you'll probably enjoy this.

Beastie Boys - Coney Island High 22.11.1995 & The Scott & Gary Show, 9.12.1984. - VIDEO

Beastie Boys' rapper, bassist, video director and Tibetan rights promoter Adam "MCA" Yauch has succumbed to cancer yesterday, aged 47. I haven't had such a strong feeling of personal loss due to a musician's death since Joe Strummer had died. Both of these men were influential to my life, not only by providing a soundtrack to countless great moments I have had, but also by giving me a framework of various interests to explore, musics to discover, even clothes to wear (I have not attended a wedding in the last 15 years wearing anything besides the Beasties' suit-and-sneakers attire). The Clash's "Sandinista!" and Beastie Boys' "Check Your Head" stand as two of the most obvious examples of outsiders successfully taking in different styles of music not "appropriate" for their background, in the process teaching their fans that all music is worthy of at least giving a chance to. Hell, even the Beasties' switch to hip-hop was such a then-unheard-of cultural/musical mismatch that it took them half a decade to prove they were NOT a joke band! Another common thread connecting Joe's and Adam's death for me is the fact both were still making vital, creative and immensely enjoyable music, and both had - or that's what I thought - still lots of time left to give more. I will never find out where Joe would have went after "Global a Go-Go", an incredible record that in my book stands much higher than the respectable, but inherently failed posthumous work "Streetcore" (and on a side note, do all those celebrities and journalists who proclaimed "Streetcore" Joe's best work, really think it's a compliment to say that a man's best work was the one others had finished for him, without his guidance and participation?); I will also probably never again hear a new Beastie Boys record. I have never seen Joe live; I have also, and will never, see the Beastie Boys live. I have seen their live footage on TV and firmly believe they were one of the best, most fun and most energetic live acts ever; even watching them on TV, I couldn't help jumping a little. I was always certain there would be tons of chances to catch them, and have missed out on shows in my region (the closest one being the Exit festival in Novi Sad, Serbia), waiting for them to come closer to my town. Who would've thought they would be taken from us so cruelly? Before I end this rambling post with a video of their two punk rock shows, one recorded in the "modern" Beasties era and the other an ancient one, I will add a few simple words bass legend and punk rock's official father figure Mike Watt wrote about Adam:

good people,

this man, brother adam... how he could work the bass!

respect!

The Devil Dogs - Live at the Revolver Club

Subtitled "The Greatest Rock'n'Roll Album You'll Never Hear!", this short and sweet live LP seems designed to be obscure - I just don't know whether it's a reference to a particularly limited pressing, or to a world that has been indifferent towards the Ramones for twenty years, so how much attention could the Devil Dogs expect? For those who don't know, and sadly there's too many of them, this band has been one of the starters of the Nineties' garage punk explosion, sharing seven-inchers with the likes of the New Bomb Turks (who idolized them, and deservedly so!), writing a shitload of incredible rock'n'roll tunes and releasing them on beautifully illustrated LP's and singles every decent household should own (I myself only have the "Big Beef Bonanza!" mini-album on vinyl, but I live in the third world so I'm excused). Of all the Crypt-and-related bands of this time period, I have always thought the Devil Dogs and Teengenerate to be the two most fun, exuberant and life-affirming ones; Teengenerate were usually more roughly recorded and produced, while the Devil Dogs were a more professional-sounding affair (well, in Crypt terms, at least!). This record however, and I don't know whether it's due to the original recording or the vinyl-to-mp3 conversion some kind soul has done, is much more harsh, loud and clipped than the Dogs usually sound, more in the Teengenerate territory, and I really don't know why I am even writing this because it really doesn't matter at all. The Devil Dogs are great any way you can hear them, but as this rip I'm posting is a lot truer to the original LP than the one available elsewhere (who encodes a rare record in 128 kb/s?! that's just mean!), I'd recommend it anyway.

Peter Brötzmann - Live in KSET

I'm not a jazz fan, although I did try to get into it during my college years - turns out I'm still more inclined towards regressive punk than progressive jazz. Still, I'm sharing this because I know the guy is well loved and respected, and the recording is of a very high quality and not available elsewhere. I don't know when this show was recorded as Brötzmann has played in KSET a number of times - I think I might have seen him once, but I may also be confusing him with Mats Gustafsson. One of them played with ZU from Italy, but the fact that I fell on my elbow while pogoing and had pains in my arm for two months afterwards indicates that it was not a typical jazz show. Or was Brötzmann's show the one where a guy blew in a trumpet without playing any notes, just making a "PFFFFFF!" sound? And of course that gig was a sit-down affair in a tiny venue, so I couldn't leave until the first break, which took ages. Well, that was the last time I went to a jazz gig. I haven't listened to this so please tell me whether it's any good!

Track listing (a very useful one):

Disc One:

1. Track 01 (45:29)
2. Track 02 (3:37)
3. Track 03 (4:37)

Disc Two:

Fun fact: the first track is longer than any Ramones album.

David Byrne - Between the Teeth

This is an audio rip of a David Byrne live VHS tape that was released back in 1993 and has been out of print for ages. It was never officially released on DVD, although there seems to have been a bootleg DVD release, probably taken from the original LaserDisc version, and this is where this rip comes from. The show was recorded in 1992 with a Latin-style band, as that type of music was Byrne's preoccupation over the course of his first two "pop" solo albums, which is where most of the setlist is derived from - with a few Talking Heads classics he is obliged to always play, of course. This is not my favourite phase of his solo career - I prefer the later, more experimental stuff - but the songs are good, the arrangements of the Heads' tunes interesting, and the sound quality superb, so it's a nice snapshot of his live show in the beginning of the '90s.

Hanson Brothers - Live at Concert Cafe 25.05.1997 + Live in Sweden

Picture stolen here.
Here are two more shows by the fabulous Hanson Brothers, both much better sounding than the one I posted some time ago. The first one is from 1997 and can be found on torrents as a single MP3 file; I have divided it into separate tracks for no real reason except being anal. It's a soundboard recording and sounds great, except the vocals could be a bit lower in the mix and the guitar a bit higher; still, it's almost as good as an official recording. The other one, recorded in Sweden (or so it says) some time later (it features songs from the "My Game" album so I'm guessing it has to be from 2002 or later) isn't as good due to shitty tape and MP3 conversion, but it's listenable and it's free, so what the hell. Enjoy!

Buzzcocks - Sessions and Otherwise

Steve Diggle some time in 1977, I believe.
I am very excited to be attending this special show next month, so here is a somewhat different Buzzcocks retrospective for your potential enjoyment. It contains a Small Faces cover from a tribute compilation, three bonus tracks from the Japanese edition of the "All Set" album, some TV and radio appearances, two radio-transmitted shows from 1979/'80 and one from 1990, a quite wonderful Steve Diggle solo EP ("Heated and Rising"), and a short acoustic session of his own. Actually, the whole first disc of this collection gravitates much more heavily towards Diggle than the Buzzcocks' official discography, and I am very pleased with that, because although he was always relegated to the status of second frontman, I always thought his songwriting and voice were absolutely up to par with Shelley's. His post-Buzzcocks career, both solo and in various band guises (Flag of Convenience, Buzzcocks F.O.C.), is criminally underappreciated and obscure, which is a pity, because those albums are brimming with excellent power-pop/rock songs that more than deserve to be heard. I hope this look at his work will make someone curious enough to check that stuff out - I don't think you'll be disappointed. Of the rest of the material, I am quite partial to the Toronto show, which is no "Entertaining Friends" in terms of sound quality, but is still good-sounding enough to warrant repeated listenings, especially since there hardly was a better live band than the Buzzcocks in 1979; and there is a poignant moment during the Manchester show when Pete dedicates "Strange Thing" to Ian Curtis, who had died a day earlier

A poster for the Toronto show featured here.

Various - Tribute to Igich

Here is a compilation of early material by two bands fronted by my friend Igich. It includes two EP's and an album by This Day Will Burn, who have recently added a new singer, and an album by Learning English, who don't exist anymore. I guess TDWB play music that could be called post-hardcore or maybe even screamo (although I normally try to avoid screamo so I wouldn't really know); Learning English were closer to early hardcore, melodic and a bit childish, but hey, we all had to start somewhere. Actually, Igich started in a few even earlier bands, the first of which embarrassingly included yours truly, but I don't have those recordings so they will remain obscure for the time being. You're not missing out on much, although we were probably the first band ever to cover both Big Black and NOFX during the same show, so I guess that counts for something, too?

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Live in Orto Bar, Ljubljana, 05.04.2001.

Some of you may have liked the Bonnie Billy show from KSET, Zagreb, which I posted in one of the older posts - almost 300 hundred downloads of that archive point in that direction, at least. Here, then, is the show from one day earlier, played in Ljubljana's Orto Bar, and thankfully in the same pristine sound quality as the Zagreb show. There is overlap in the material played, but not as much as you'd expect from two shows one day apart; and just like that recording, this one would make a legitimate live album release with no problems whatsoever. Thanks to SoulSeek user "punkica" who I downloaded this from, and I hope she enjoys the Bitch Magnet show from Osijek. :)

Kepone - 6 Songs

Yet another in the long line of Best Bands Ever, Kepone released at least one 100% perfect masterpiece in their time together, their eponymous third - and sadly last - album, which has managed to pull off such an incredible combination of genres that I really have no-one else to compare them to. They had pop-punk melodies, married to noise-rock playing, interspersed with beautiful exuberant folk passages, which effortlessly crossed the line into redneck humor and back in the space of a few bars. Or at least that's how I hear them? Some more or less similar contemporaries might be Guzzard or Chokebore, but if you know of those bands, you know Kepone, too. Anyway, here is a short collection of their first two seven inches ("Henry/Prisoners" and "295/Phobic"), an appearance on a split single with my beloved Pegboy ("The Ghost"), and a compilation slot ("Holler"). They had one more 7" out, "Conjure Man/Fire on the Double Wide", but as you can buy those songs digitally, I'll refrain from including them here. Enjoy if you are already a fan, and if you are not, start with the "Kepone" album and proceed to your liking. Most of the time you can obtain all three of their CD's for a total of $15 or thereabouts; if you wish to do so, head over here.

Hanson Brothers - Live in Zagreb, Tvornica 30.03.2012.

I've been lucky to see the Hanson Brothers two nights in a row this weekend, supported by the wonderful Invasives (and, on the show in Osijek, my friends This Day Will Burn). For those who don't know, the Hanson Brothers are an alter ego of the legendary Nomeansno - in this guise, they play stupid, catchy, Ramones-influenced (or rather, Ramones-ripped-off) punk rock dedicated to the celebration of "the hockey game". Although Nomeansno are one of my absolutely favourite bands, up until these shows I haven't really "got" the Hansons, thinking they were just a bit TOO stupid for my taste; turns out there's no such thing as "too stupid". I had great drunken fun at both shows and, revisiting their albums afterwards, found out that there really are tons of great songs in their canon. This morning I went on YouTube to check if there were any videos from the shows, and was pleasantly surprised to see that some kind soul had recorded the whole Zagreb show and uploaded it. So, these mp3's are basically just the audio portion of those videos, separated into individual songs and ever so slightly enhanced by a mild equalizer. So don't expect "Bridges to Babylon" here: this is probably just this side of listenable, but I have heard lots of bootlegs that sound even worse and actually sell for real money, so this is still infinitely better. I think I can even hear myself talk sometime between "Rink Rat" and "Lovesick", and even though I can't really understand what I said, I'm 110% sure it was something very smart and funny. So, if you've been to either of the shows, this might be a nice piece of digital memorabilia, and if not, perhaps you'll be able to get an idea of what the whole shenanigan was like. Too bad the Invasives portion was not recorded, as they really are an amazingly fresh and interesting little band, but I'll try to dig out something else by them to share on the blog in the future. Have fun!

MDC - Live Mocvara, Zagreb, 01.07.2003. - VIDEO

The poster is for a show at the same venue, four years later.
Here's a rather good quality video recording of a Croatian MDC show from 2003, shot by a friend and uploaded to YouTube a long time ago, but now in a slightly better looking and sounding MPEG format. Enjoy.

Radio Birdman - The Essential Radio Birdman Disc 2

Some years ago Sub Pop has released an anthology of the great Australian punk rock pioneers Radio Birdman, an excellent release with one major flaw: why compile HALF of a band's recorded output and call the thing "The ESSENTIAL Radio Birdman", when the half you left off is no less essential than what is on it? Why not do a nice double-disc anthology of both of their excellent albums, padded out with the few EP's and live recordings that feature non-LP material, and end the story once and for all? But, as Sub Pop was too cheap to do this (and it baffles me because the thing they did put out is quite lovingly and nicely packaged), now you have to chase the original albums on Australian websites, pay excessive prices for them, and, in the case of the second LP "Living Eyes", accept the inferior version without the corresponding EP tracks as the earlier one seems to be out of print. So, for all of us who own the widely available Sub Pop package, I have compiled the remainder of the material recorded during their original run (there was a reunion which spawned an album called "Zeno Beach" and I believe several live discs; a B-side from this era, "Rock Bottom", is included here, too), designed to be a bonus disc to the official "Essential" one. Have fun with it!

Heathen, Destruction, Sepultura, Exodus - Live Thrashfest Classics 2011

Sepultura in Zagreb; from Time Machine Music.

Here are complete sets by four of the five bands which participated in last year's "Thrashfest Classics" tour, recorded at Hamburg's Markthalle on December 5th 2011. The only band that is missing is the first one, Mortal Sin from Australia, which is a pity for me personally because that's the band that I missed when the tour came to Zagreb. All the other bands were excellent, playing material from their early, genre-defining rainbows* (although Sepultura's "Chaos A.D." is hardly a THRASH classic) in the modern spirit of '80s nostalgia (which usually bothers me, but it's hard to keep one's convictions while Sepultura is playing "Infected Voice"). The sound quality is wonderful for an audience recording, you just might need to play with the equalizer a bit to take down the bass and enhance the middle; this worked for me but hear for yourself. And to give credit where it's due: all four sets were downloaded from Dimeadozen, where they are available as torrents, in FLAC format; I've converted them to 320 kbps mp3's to save drive space, but if you want the originals, get them there. On to the sets...

Mule - Singles, Outtakes and Live

Picture stolen from this blog.
There used to be a hateful tirade at the start of this post, born of a silly misunderstanding and best forgotten. In its place I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. K.M. for allowing me to share these recordings here.

Here is a great unreleased track, a different version of "Tennessee Hustler", and an hour's worth of mostly excellent-sounding live recordings by the wonderful Mule. The live recordings supposedly originate from Hamburg, but I have no idea whether they all come from a single show, or which order they were played in. I made a playlist by mixing the slower and faster material, and keeping the few poor-sounding tracks at the end, but you are free to sort them in whichever way you see fit. The live version of "To Love Somebody" is supposed to be an outtake from the Tempermill studio (like the two studio recordings, "Tennessee Hustler" and "Tell Me Now" - if that's really the name of the song), but it does have crowd noise at the end - would Mule bother with fake live recordings, and why? I guess we'll never know. It's a beautiful version anyway, well, if you know this band, than you know that the small body of work they left behind is 100% genius, so no surprise there. Enjoy!

Check out what this cool guy does.
